Uh...widescreen. I'm absolutely irritated when I hear someone complain about widescreen cutting off the picture. It's exactly the opposite, fullscreen stretches the picture to take up the entire length of your television. This totally destroys the OAR of the picture and what the director intended. I feel sorry for all these people that are loading up on fullscreen dvds, within the next 10 years all TVs will be widescreen, so all those people that hate the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen will have 2 black bars on the left and right of their screen.

Check out these WS/FS comparisons:

I prefer full screen but it's not that important. It will take at least 20 years and probably longer before tv's go completely to HDTV (which was completely idiotic idea, HDTV is already 25 years out of date and not worth the expense) so that doesn't really go into decision making about my purchases. Also I do own widescreen dvds though-like I said it's not important.

Good comparisons. I can see that widescreen is obviously better. I notice that in widscreen format you get the bigger picture. You can fit in more action in the widescreen format than in the full screen format.

It depends on the OAR. If shot in widescreen, then I want to see it in [anamorphic] widescreen; if in fullframe, then I want to see it in full frame [even if the theatrical exhibition is in open matte].
I agree with you on that, I'm only saying that I want anything shot in WS in WS. Kubrick comes to mind with the open matte; Eyes Wide Shut etc etc.
