I've been a self employed consultant/programmer for 7 years. Last year, I completed a job for my primary client of 5 years, who told me there was another in the pipeline, that he just had to "get some loose ends tied up first".

A month went by, and he was still promising. In times past, I've had to float a month or 2 on credit cards, then paid them off when my work picked up. So.. I began floating on credit cards, anticipating he'd have the work as promised. Several months of promises went by until I told him I HAD to have the work, at which point he said he'd talk to his boss. He came back saying the budget was gone for the promised work.

Last winter, we delivered phone books to keep food on the table. My wife, who had been homeschooling 3 of our 4 kids, had to take a job for the first time in 14 years. I'm back working now, but so far in the hole it's hard to see daylight.

I believe in the power of prayer. I believe God can work miracles in our lives (when I have a little more time, I'll tell you a story of one he pulled off when our youngest son got hit by a car). Lest you sense a pitch for a handout coming.. please know that's not why I'm here. I would sincerely ask you to add us to your prayer list as we work through this mess.

At the same time, I'd like to invite anyone else who is dealing with life's hardships to post your needs here for prayer. I can't think of anything better we can do for each other.

Thanks, and.. you know... God Bless! Mark

You have my prayer, and I offer some good words to think about:

"My bretheren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (James 1:2-4).

working perfectly with,

"And we now that all things work together for the good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28).

Paul often called Him the God of comforts, and it is easy to see why. All things work for our good and trials teach us patience, prefecting us. Indeed, "If God is for us, who an be against us?" (v. 31b).

And yes, I always need prayer for my sin. I've been having struggles, but after reading Romans, God has strengthened me. By the power of Jesus Christ, I am overcoming the sin in my life. Understand, I am nothing, but Christ is power. However, I am always in need of prayers lest my weak flesh be tempted.

There's no doubt that God 'tempers' us through trials. I've grown spiritually through this ordeal. But it ain't something I'd recommend to my friends.

Those who were closest to God in the bible had rigorous prayer lives which included fasting and denial of the physical pleasures that America (in particular) is known for. I suspect that it's hard to reach a deep spiritual relationship with God when the good times roll. But, by the same token, I'd like to have his help climbing out of the holes that have so tested me this past year...

I'll be praying for your strength in temptation. I guess we could all use a little of that.

FatherApe, I'm a programmer myself... 21 years with the same company. I can sympathize with your situation. In these uncertain times, I know that not even excellence in performance can guarantee continued employment. So I just "do my best, and commit the rest."

In addition to praying for a solution to the immediate financial issue, I'm praying that the Lord will give you a sense of discernment regarding how you ended up in this situation.

Oftentimes when God tries to tell us something, we either ignore Him, or don't notice what He's saying because of the worldly noise surrounding us or our own self-centered nature.

God will keep telling us ...each time getting "louder" and "louder" until we "hear" it. Sometimes we can hear His whisper... other times, nothing short of a 2x4 over the head will get our attention.

If you ask the Lord what message you were supposed to be "getting"....He'll let you know. :)

Yes.. well, last year when my contract work came to a screeching halt, I thought mebbe God was telling me it was time for a real job. So, like thousands of others, I began applying like mad for one. I interviewed for several positions, 2 or 3 of which got killed between the time I interviewed and the time they were to make a final decision. I wondered if that wasn't a sign..

Oh well, if any of you are praying, I have a new item for the list. Last night I met my wife after she got off work at 9 to celebrate our 22nd anniversary. On the way home, the car we just put a $2500 transmission into died the big death.
Miracle time...
