• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

One question that might be relevant might be:

1. Do you own your ideas or

2. do your ideas own you?

Like the Tareyton smoker would you rather fight than switch?

Would you fight to the death for a principle, a religion, capitalism?

That's what the people who run the country want, they just wind us up and send us to war, it really is that simple.

(I would say it is easy to slip from 1 to 2 so the best option is just to pick the best ideas like a customer picks food and if one proves not to work then swap it for another - I believe in continuous self-improvement - I don't always believe your first guess was the best one I'll ever have)

Are you implying that you yourself have no philosophy?

No.

Think carefully about what the video is saying. What is its message?

This reminds me of quote, I don't remember the author, or the exact wording, so I'm paraphrasing. Here goes, "It's an immature ideal to die for a cause, a mature one to live for it instead.".

Who needs philosophy? Obviously not the youth of today if we look at school curriculums in the Uk. I personally think there ought to be an option for it. Probably thought its not viewed as economically significant by the powers that be, and therefore marginalised.

Great vid.

Maybe we can speak of philosophy as a cultural influence, and therefore something to be valued even if it isn't engaged with an individual's personal life, and also philosophy as a personal continuing practice. The latter, I think, is the ideal, but if we're speaking of human happiness, thinking can be a very difficult and painful thing unless you're appropriately skilled at not letting the mystery overcome you.

Philosophy should be it's own thing. I only did the short course so didn't do philosophy in GCSE, only in A level. More people might pick it if it wasn't called religion. In fact religion could even fall within the subject of philosophy.
