Shouldn't all the atheist vs Christianity debate stuff be in apologetics or whatever?
Shouldn't all the atheist vs Christianity debate stuff be in apologetics or whatever?
Why in philosophy? I guess it applies loosely, but seriously. Is this all philosophy means for most people?
"No its science! No its religion! No I said it is verifiable! But you think it needs to be!"
Good grief
I'm not asking for peace. Have the argument. But why in philosophy?
I want to "sit around and giggle" and maybe smoke a cigar, or deal with the implications of some strain of a notion in society for petesake. It could even be scientific, or religious but PHILOSOPHY ON THE PHILOSOPHY THREAD
Is that so wrong?!

In many small schools, philosophy and religion are put in ONE department. It is OK.
No one tells you not to talk about the philosophy of religion.
As a starting point, what makes the life of Brian parody a "comedy", and my opinion of the world a "philosophy"?
'Always look on the bright side of life' is not 'philosophy', except in the vernacular mis-sense of the word. It is, at best, a trite cliche, useless to the people who, arguably, need it the most; the clinically depressed. Presumably the intent of this commandment to optimism is to increase the sum of human happiness, which is a worthy goal. However, it could well be that on examination it necessarily fails in it's intent; which brings us to 'true' or 'real' philosophy.
True philosophy is distinguished from most of the discussions on this forum by it's employment of reasoned argument as justification for, and sole arbiter of, the truth value of an assertion. I would agree with the OP that some philosophy, in this latter sense, and even if only a smattering, would greatly improve the quality of some of the posts here evident. With respect to the bright side of life, it may just be that a sceptical realism is a better mental posture in respect of happiness than undue optimism, being that one is less likely to be wrong, and less likely to be disappointed when one is.
Best wishes, Strivax.
It isn't that some religious threads don't philosophical merit. It's that many people on here for whatever reason make the thread discussion into a circus.
I love the purity of philosophy - where everyone can be right and wrong, sage and student all at the same time.
It is unfortunate the philosophy forum is sometimes used as a (sometimes messy) apologetics forum.

I'm a sarxus, not a circus.
I wonder what really is the difference between "spiritualist" religion, "empirical" science, and "logical" philosophy?
All three have man at the helm, deciding what "it" is.
Sort of ironic, don't you think?
