Some people say that being a Prepper is a lack of faith. However i think that it depends on the persons motivation. It's not necessarily a lack of faith which compels a person to being a Prepper, and surely we can agree that's its good to examine ourselves, our faith, and to mediate on the Teaching of Christ and His apostles.

Philippians 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.


My motivation

Im not really a Prepper but i do enjoy (as a hobby) things like survival techniques and simple living. I enjoy discovering things like solar power, rocket stoves and gasifiers, gardening, blacksmithing and carpentry. All of these things are good hobbies, and they can be helpful in situations where one would need to improvise. I suffer with depression and other such things, and this hobby gives me much needed enjoyment and also gives me more positive things to focus on. Its therapeutic, and even spiritual because work is a spiritual thing. I dont however worry about tomorrow. I dont need to store up anything in order to feel secure, and i do my best to put faith in God. I would however not mind growing and canning my own food, or preparing for an emergency. It seems like practical wisdom to me, not a lack of faith necessarily. Seriously, is working for a living a lack of faith? Why does one work if God has abundantly supplied all our needs? Because God wants us to work, of course. Its spiritual and good. I dont think this is necessarily a lack of faith although it could be depending on the person. Its all about motivation i think, and its good to examine our motivations and take any fears or weaknesses that we may have to God in prayer. The scriptures say to be anxious for nothing, but to take all things to God in prayer. They also say to be thankful for all things. Im thankful to God for my hobby, it seems like a blessing.

Much of what is called prepping now was standard responsible living not that long ago.
My mom is 90, and I can even remember when we had to go pick fruits and vegetables from a farm and can them because that was what we could afford. And we had a small garden. The grocery store prices were too high. She sewed all out clothes - even my dad's white shirts for church and work. The scraps were used to make quilts. Dinners were cooked from scratch. To be honest, I ate MUCH better then than later on before going back to real food.

It was about being thrifty, not wasting money, and being a good steward. We always helped out families in need, housed missionaries home on furlough and contributed to church expenses.

Today many are real wasteful. Many buy water when there is perfectly good water out of the tap. Many buy sugary soft drinks that do nothing for us. Many buy processed pre-made foods at higher prices and buy lots of snacks. There are lots of ways money is spent unwisely - and wastefully.

To me, prepping is good stewardship. I am saving for the rainy day and that supply will be there when the rough times come. That supply will be for others as well.

Many times my food stores have been used to create boxes of groceries for others. I follow the adage "Store what you eat and eat what you store" so it's not like I have odd freeze-dried stuff to give away to people in need, just everyday canned and dry foodstuffs. :)

I do not prep for myself.
I prep for my wife, my kids, and my grand-kids.
I prep for those who, for whatever reason, do not prep today.
Perhaps we prep so that they can see the grace and love of God.
