Philippians 2:9-16

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. 14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings: 15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; 16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.

This passage was brought up in the Baptist forum, so I thought I'd toss it in here for opinion...what about the "fear and trembling"--what do you think that is referring to?

It appears to me that Paul is saying, "I am not going to be around to lead you, so you will need to make your own spiritual decisions. But, be careful not to deceive yourself in what is right before God."

Carefully demonstrate that you are saved, with fear and trembling, lest you deceive some people into rejecting Christ because you misrepresent Him.

Every day you are to distrust your own human efforts and wisdom. You are to fear to speak at random, fear to follow your own impulses, fear that pride of heart and love of the world and lust of the flesh shall exclude the precious grace the Lord Jesus is longing to bestow upon you.

The salvation of the human soul requires the will power to be subjected to the divine will power. . . . And it is the very hardest, sternest conflict which comes with the purpose and hour of great resolve and decision of the human to incline the will and way to God's will and God's way.

Man is allotted a part in this great struggle for everlasting life; he must respond to the working of the Holy Spirit. It will require a struggle to break through the powers of darkness, but the Spirit that works in him can and will accomplish this. But man is no passive instrument to be saved in indolence. He is called upon to strain every muscle in the struggle for immortality, yet it is God that supplies the efficiency.

Without man's co-operation ,God cannot save him.

1. what is at stake : heaven or hell
2. have you studied to show yourself approved of rightly dividing the gospel
3. have you spread unconfirmed opinions & are guilty of misleading others by "assumption , presumption, or offense"
4. are you born again of water and spirit (baptized and confirmed)
5. is there evidence of your faith -- christian works
