  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, I guess I should start by saying that I don't have any pets on my own. I like to travel quite a lot, so it wouldn't be the easiest thing in the world to have pets. However, I'm very fond of cats especially, and there's this story I just have to share.

My neighbour used to have two cats. However, she did not always want to have them in the house, so they spent some time in her garden as well. Since her house is right next to ours, they also came to visit us sometimes - when the doors were left open, they even came into the house.

One of those cats became somewhat fond of me (maybe because I would usually pick him up when he came and meowed at me :)), and used to come inside just to look for me. Sometimes when I was at school or otherwise out, it just came in, looked at the place I used to sit at and meowed at my mom as if asking where I was. When I wasn't there, it would just leave again. It was crazy, because this was not even MY cat!

But...I digress...this wasn't really what I wanted to talk about, but I guess it's background info for what I'm going to ask later :)

One day I was being very, very nervous, because we were going to get to know if we had to take oral exams at school or not. This was really scary for me, and I was sort of restless that day. So, I was sitting in the kitchen talking to my mom, and then the cat came in and just jumped right onto my lap. Usually, he would just lie still there, but this day he suddenly wanted to be much closer to me than usual...I'd say that if cats could give hugs, that's what he did...

So, what do you think - can pets really know how people are feeling? Do they know when we're nervous or upset? Because it really seemed like this cat wanted to comfort me, and it's just too hard to understand how he could know that I needed that just then.

What do you think?

i believe they can tune into your emotions:cry: and physical wellbeing. Wen i have a cut or an ache of some kind:sick: , my dog (7yr old boxerXwolfhound) comes and sniffs where that pain is. licks then settles her head on my lap. And wenever im feeling low or spent, she would come over to where i would b and nuzle me and curl up next to. As if to give me comfort. And with my 8month old kitten, the same. I believe they can sense and tune into our fellings better than some1 youve known and loved your whole life. GO THE PETS!

I think pets can definitely sense what we're feeling...my ex roommate's cat, who's not known for being the nicest feline in the world, once came up and sat on my lap, purring and nuzzling, after I'd had a horrible day. He'd never done that before, and he never did it again!

I believe animals have emotions. Maybe not like ours truly, but certainly they have instincts for emotions. My "fur face" (Amber) my sheltie, sure knows my mood swings'''lol

My question to fieldmouse is, does this mean you've had great days every since your ex-roommates cat cuddled with you? lol. You sure would have been blessed then if that were to hold true.

I definitely think animals can tell what you are feeling. Whenever I am sick, my dog and cats seem to know. They want to lay by me the whole day. And the day I had to put my horse to sleep, he was in the pasture, and my other horse came up to me and stood by me for a long time, just letting me lean on him and standing by me. He usually doesn't stand that calm, but that day he was. I know he knew something was wrong.

My cat Sylvia is very sensitive to my moods and feelings. She is not a cuddly cat by nature but when she senses that I am in distress, she jumps into my lap and purrs. Not proof, of course, purely anecdotal; but all the animals who have owned me in the past have been the same as Sylvia. What wonderful companions animals are! I think God blesses us with their love!
