  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Are there any fans of this singer? I'm not just talking about liking the song, "In Your Eyes." Everyone likes that song. But does anyone here celebrate the guy's complete catalog?

The first song I heard from him was "Shock the Monkey". I never understood what it was about. I mean, I knew it was a metaphor. But if you gave me a million years to analyze the lyrics, I would never have figured it out. I finally found out, and it's sort of amusing to think that people actually believed it was about animals. They aren't really that stupid are they? I mean, I was a kid when I first heard it and I never thought it, and I'm not that bright, really. Anyway, here is the Interpretation on Wikipedia: "Due to its title and the content of the video, the song is frequently assumed to be either an animal rights song or a reference to the famous experiments by Stanley Milgram described in his book Obedience to Authority. It is neither, although another Gabriel song, "We Do What We're Told (Milgram's 37)", from his 1986 album So, does deal directly with Milgram. Gabriel himself has described "Shock the Monkey" as "a love song" that examines how jealousy can release one's baser instincts; the monkey is not a literal monkey, but a metaphor for one's feelings of jealousy."

He's kind of similar to Phil Collins. They both were members of Genesis. Both singers, songwriters, and multi-instrumentalists. Except people seemed to like Phil Collins a lot more. He sold a few million units for every one that Peter Gabriel sold.

Sometimes his performances are even more confusing than his lyrics. But I still love it. His voice always sounds perfect, too. He's a multi-instrumentalist on record, but I like the way that he uses musicians when performing live, freeing him to do his other unusual stuff on stage.

Probably the most distinguished art-pop solo artist of all time, after Bowie. I like his solo stuff. I loved him with Genesis. The band's quality took a serious nose-dive not too long after his departure.

That's a matter of taste, really. They became hugely successful after Phil Collins took lead of the group.

I like them both equally: Peter Gabriel and Genesis/Collins. (I've never heard any of the early Genesis.)
