Who are you... Humpty Dumpty?Just because science may have a different meaning for the word theory does't mean that it doesnt use theory by its other definition as well.
That isn't evidence of anything divine. That's just as easily explained...indeed better explained...by an evolved survival instinct.
I have a meaningful existence without any notion of God.
"Neurological conditions" aren't necessarily meaningless.
eudaimonia,

Who are you... Humpty Dumpty?
Don't you think when people tell you that they use a word with a specific meaning in a certain situation... that they mean it? Are you completely unable to accept that other people mean what they say?
So, when something is based on "trial and error", it is unproven and flawed?I understood. I understand what science means by theory, but it doesnt change the fact that science is a lot of guess work, thats why it uses trial and error to discover things. That trial and error is based on a theoretical and unproven idea. You guys are just playing word games because you feel the need to dodge the fact that evolution is unproven and flawed as well.
Thats ridiculous.
Do you live in Stalinist Russia?
I'm not. Your response doesn't even address my point, which is that you are using the word 'theory' incorrectly. Please dont act like scientific theory is never vulnerable to fallacy.
You have freedom of speech. You don't have the freedom to immunise your speech from criticism.Once again the dear old atheist tries to play the hard done by card. They always seem to come up with responses that suggest the world is according to them. They have a distinct lack of ability to see beyond you in your small corner and I in mine. Because they do not personally do or say what is being suggested then it does not happen.
Well I have got news for you, cultural stalinism is alive and well in western society and hardly a day goes by that some atheist or atheist organisation is going about their business doing their best to be a pain in the backside to a christian or some christian organisation who said or did something that they didn't like. Whereas most people would let sleeping dogs lie the atheists are not happy unless they are stirring the pot.
Likewise, we are being taken to task by the gaystapo if you disagree with them about all things homosexual. To then, having an alternative view means that you are homophobic or a bigot or hateful or intolerant or speak evangelical claptrap and if you really get their goat all hell is let loose and you are hauled before the courts or human rights commission [sic] and you may lose your job, your house, your business, and your reputation.
Although they constantly bleat about tolerance it is very obvious that they are the most intolerant people on earth. As one of them said "you can believe what you want as long as you keep your mouth shut." So much for freedom of speech.
I'm not. Your response doesn't even address my point, which is that you are using the word 'theory' incorrectly.
Another response that doesn't address the content of the post you are responding to.Why assume that emotions are not significant in discovering truth?
Yes, you are.No im not using it incorrectly.
Please don't be dishonest. I never suggested that scientific theories are infallible.I have only suggested that scientific theory if vulnerable to fallacy. You want to deny this by playing a word definition game
Being a questioning type of guy. I always wondered if the 6,000 estimate was based on fiction.
In a time of high infant mortality, no protection from diseases, a simple ailment could kill. Would it make sense to tell people the prophets were so good, they lived 100s of years. No one has ever found bones to prove it. So James Ussher's calculations are all wrong. We know they are wrong, because he didn't know the exact date of their death. And we now have scholars who think the word day is a bad translation.
"The Hebrew word yom has three literal meanings - a 12-hour period of time (sunrise to sunset), a 24-hour period of time from sunset to sunset (the Hebrew day), and an indefinite period of time."
So could be 6 days, or 3 billion years.
I'm sorry, where have I done that? Have I said that churches cannot be built? Have I said that people cannot worship whatever gods they choose? I haven't. Do you want to give your cloak to somebody? Knock yourself out; I'm not stopping you.
You don't want to understand, do you?Plaese dont debate the word theory then. If scientific theory is vulnerable to fallacy then my definition of theory seems to fit.
In regard to the derailed discussion in this thread: I don't believe you. I think you are lying. But because I am a scientifically minded guy, I ask you to present your evidence for testing. No one has said you have done that. The writer was speaking generically and if the cap fits wear it. I have plenty of stories on my computer that I have gathered over the last two years that tell the story of atheists who are determined to stop any expression of christianity even to the point when the deed done is to relieve suffering and want.
As soon as you start using the word correctly.Plaese dont debate the word theory then. If scientific theory is vulnerable to fallacy then my definition of theory seems to fit.
Actually, I think that people can discern what is meaningful and purposeful to them. I don't think that it is a pure invention.
What makes you think that I would want to deny Christians the right to be Christians? I'm in favor of freedom of religion.
Do you think that discussing religion with you somehow prevents you from leading a Christian lifestyle? How is that accomplished?eudaimonia,Mark
