k im not sure if ppl rnt interested in this subject, if i put it under the rong subject or wat and im not sure if ppl no wat it is. In case u dunt, perfect pitch is the ability to recognize a certain pitch once u hear it. For example it means that if sumone plays a B on a piano (no matter which one) u will be able to tell, or if someone plays a C flat on a violin, u will be able to tell that thats wat it is.

wat do u mean to test or set up ur stereo equipment? how do u use it?

Well, I don't know for sure that Boston has perfect pitch, but I read it somewhere. Their album, long before digital technology was like a symphony with every note precisely where it should be in accord with another. So, when I say I use it to test the quality or set my stereo, what I mean is, if Boston does not sound great on the stereo, I wouldn't buy it. It is just perfect music, every note.

I haven't got perfect pitch and I don't think its possible to get perfect pitch, you are born with it. It is possible to get good pitch which I believe I probably have got as I play violin and piano - two very precise instruments tuning wise. I personally see perfect pitch as a curse sometimes, especially in choral music. As is common, it is fairly common to slip a bi in a peace tuning wise by a small degree, most wouldn't notice but a perfect pitcher does and has to transpose every note as a result.

I play violin too it is a very hard instrument cuz of pitch, u need a good ear. But ne wayz i have heard of it kinda being a curse but i dunt think it is. i was actually working on developing it at this site but they closed it down. I think it was really working. Although i was just starting and it takes a while. but i went frum having no idea wat a note was to getting down pretty much all the naturals. so now if i hear a note on the violin or piano (an actual note) and it is natural i might be able to tell wat it is. But i cannot for xample say o ok that is so many degrees flat or so many degrees sharp or no no dats not EXACTLY a "G" i just no wat a G, E, A, C, sound like so dats how i can tell. keep up the posts guys

God Bless

I think we have diff. ideas of perfect pitch.. a good ear is when you can tell a note, this is good, the bad thing about perfect pitch is that they can tell both key and note, if it is in g major and it flattens they notice and have to transpose everything down so far in order to blend. Apart from the fact that it will sound horrible to them!
I to probably have a pretty good year although a piece has to slip at least a semitone for me to notice... by which time the piece will be down the drain anyway.

lol no no i no there is a diff i was just saying that i was starting to be able to identify different notes although i don't quite get u mean by the G major flattening. Perfect pitch lets u identify the note sure and with that u can figure out the key but their not like stuck together to the point where if an accidental is placed you have to transpose everything

What I am saying is that if a choir is singing something in g major but they flatten by say... half a semitone then someone with perfect pitch would realise that and have to transpose every note down to sound like the rest of the choir, otherwise they will clash. People without perfect pitch would be unlikely to notice a small slip like that.

oooooo i think i get wat u mean now. thing is... its one thing to have perfect pitch, and one thing to be able to sing perfectly. u might notice someone is half a degree out of pitch but that would take years and years and years and years to be able to train ur ear that much. and half a degree or a flat w/e wont sound like complete horror to you just a bit and its not like u will turn into a super computer that will go hey-wire cuz not everythign is in pitch i have a frend who has perfect pitch and she can tell ne note on ne instrument and like random sounds like a beep on a computer or w/e but im sure she wont b able to say o w8 dats 40 degrees flatter than it should b or w/e and it doesnt bother her at all

Hi,

Perfect pitch is the ability identify any note by name without the benefit of a reference note.

This article in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_pitch covers many of the points that have been discussed in this thread, along with quite a bit more info ... including some thoughts on whether or not perfect pitch helps or hinders musicians.

I recall reading a paper about 10 years ago which identified specific parts of the brain that responded to specific frequencies. The implication was that perfect pitch is 'built in'. Everyone has the necessary receptors, but not everyone learns how to differentiate between the various areas being stimulated.

The Wikipedia article reports that there is a higher percentage of people with perfect pitch among those who speak tonal languages, like Mandarin, and those who study music. That would imply that perfect pitch is built in and can be learned, especially if one starts early ... say before age 6.
