How do you think Christians view classical music? Do people think it's evil? I personally enjoy it quite a bit.
Jan

I don't think classical music has the distinction of being evil; not anymore, at least. In the Middle Ages, the tritone (augmented fourth/diminished fifth) interval was considered "diabolus in musica"-- the devil's interval.

So much of the canon of classical music (at least through the Baroque era) has been written specifically for religious purposes; for anyone to pass blanket judgement on Western art music as a whole would be pretty irrational... Individual composers or works are another story entirely, but even then it would be hard to label something as "evil" in any real sense.

Handel, Bach and MANY other great early composers were devout Christians. Bach dedicated all his music to the glory of almighty God. I personally don't know a single Christian who considers Classical music "evil".

Like any type of music, one can find a few examples of questionable material. But considered as a whole, Classical cannot intelligently be considered "evil", especially considering so many of its "Founding Fathers" were strong Christians who frequently composed hymns etc.

wow, I can't see why it would be evil.. I guess you could make anything evil if you wanted to. But all I know, when I listen to Vivaldi, it's as if the gates of Heaven open up and God's ears perk up as He says, "Well done!". I like almost all kinds of music. I have fallen away from the rock-n-roll of my youth, mainly because the lyrics are so dirty and bring back memories of parties and the like. So I listen to Christian rock, praise and worship, classical. I like some classic rock if it's clean.

I absolutely love classical music, it happens to be my favorite genre of music.
Possibly because I was a ballerina for so long and that's all I danced to, but I've listened to it my whole life. I am really starting to appreciate it more now that I am older.
I don't think that is is "evil" or whatnot, some people can mistake it as a gothic kind of music sometimes (depends on the composer) but I really don't think they know what they're saying.

Its NOT evil...:)
I really enjoy classical music - especially classical saxophone. People tend to think that the only classical music out there is Beethoven, Bach and Mozart (nothing against their music- i really like it), but there are other less know composers out there as well that take a different approach.

There just really isn't much classical sax music out there. Standard stuff is Eccles' Sonata and Milhaud's Scaramouche (which is a "bear", according to the single-reed professor here), but I really can't think of much else that was written specifically for the saxophone.

I know what you mean about commonly-known composers. Many people I know who claim to love music can only cite those three and possibly Brahms or Schubert as classical composers. What about Schumann (both), Mendelssohn, Mahler, Elgar, Poulenc, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Tchaikovsky?

Well, I'm just getting into it myself so those are my starting points.
