  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"Peace is inside you.
Wherever you go, peace goes with you.
When you climb on a bus, peace goes with you.
When you are fighting, peace goes with you.
When you are asleep, peace is within you.
When you are frustrated beyond imagination, peace is in you.
No matter what you do, there is no place you can go where peace will not come with you.
Because it's within you."

Tranquility/Peace

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27)

Tranquility is a divine word because it comes only with effort and divine providence. Like the dancer who has lived their art until they have attain the seamless performance of simplicity, or like the artist and musician who have expressed the perfect balance between the celestial and earthly realms because of many sleepless nights, so is tranquility born when we have perfected virtuous action, purified our intentions, and gained unsurpassable faith.

"And he said unto them, ‘Why are ye fearful, o ye of little faith?’ then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm." (Matthew 8:26)

Like the winds and sea, our minds are lost to the turmoil of fear and doubt. Jesus shows us that by gaining control of the mind through faith and trust, we will find the calmness of the sea. When we can sink into ourselves and rest in the peace of trusting in GOD, our minds, thoughts, emotions, and desires all calm down and turn towards peacefully resting within GOD.

"Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto GOD. And the peace of GOD, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:5-7)

By moderation, keeping a vigilant awareness of our thoughts, and constantly dedicating everything we do to GOD, we will then be ready to receive the peace of GOD. Philippians continues on to talk about being true, honest, just, pure, loving, good, and virtuous as a means to attain the presence of the Lord of Peace. It is through these actions that we can find peace and with peace, live in tranquility. Another key to peace is to find contentment with whatever we have.

"Not that I speak in respect of want; for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content." (Philippians 4:6)

Through contentment we no longer suffer the pains of jealousy and desire. When we are free from the fetters of desire, fear, hatred, and ignorance, we awaken to the peace that Jesus gave to us.

Things to contemplate

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27)
· Define tranquility.
· What is this verse saying?
· Make a list of all the things you are afraid of.
· Make a list of all the things that trouble you in your life.

"And he said unto them, ‘Why are ye fearful, o ye of little faith?’ then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm." (Matthew 8:26)
· What does fear have to do with having little faith?
· How does emotional and mental turmoil affect our faith?
· What is the connection between having faith and finding peace?

"Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto GOD. And the peace of GOD, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:5-7)
· What does moderation, being vigilant, prayer, and being thankful have to do with peace?
· What does be careful for nothing mean?
· What is the peace of GOD?

Things we can do to awaken Tranquility

· Meditate on GOD.
· Trust in GOD.
· Weaken attachments and desires by confronting them and resolving to transform them into their opposite quality.
· Find contentment with whatever you have.
· Follow the Ten Commandments to perfection.
· Rest in Christ.
· Tranquility comes when we have complete faith in GOD; for we know there is nothing to fear. Know that GOD is with us always.
· Be moderate in everything you do.
· Constantly be thankful for everything.
· Always have a heart of prayer.
