CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The "judges" of Israel were also called Elohim, so the question is, which translation of "Elohim" is the correct one? The vast majority of the of the available English Bibles translate Elohim as "God" in Exodus 22:28 (I'm assuming because in context, "God" makes the most sense), but the AV and two others use either "gods" or "judges" instead.

the Hebrew word translated into "gods" is 'elohiym. As mentioned early it can be translated in to more than just "God".
taking examples close to the text we don't have to go very far to find different uses of the word
Ex 22:20
He who sacrifices to any ['elohiym], other than to the LORD alone, shall be utterly destroyed.
it is clear that in the above verse 'elohiym is god small 'g'
Ex 22:9
For every breach of trust, whether it is for ox, for donkey, for sheep, for clothing, or for any lost thing about which one says, 'This is it,' the case of both parties shall come before the ['elohiym]; he whom the ['elohiym] condemn shall pay double to his neighbor.
easily you can see that both God or god do not quite fit in this passage and it seems 'elohiym in this case is referring to a person. From the text this is translated into "judges"
Ex 21:13
But if he did not lie in wait for him, but ['elohiym] let him fall into his hand, then I will appoint you a place to which he may flee.
The text translates this as big 'G' God
It does seem evident that this word is a bit more broader than just the a name for God. The word is plural in nature so does have a more proper translation of "gods" but as we know it can refer to the Godhead together however English rejects the word "Gods". In the 2606 times it occurs in the OT it mostly is translated as God big 'G'. This word is found in some of the most fundamental verses in the bible referring to God for example Genesis 1:1. It really is about context why it would be God or gods or perhaps judges or even angels.
Of the 22 versions that I looked at 16 of them directly use "God" and 2 use "me" referring to God in the first person, so a total of 18. Only 2 use "judges" the remaining 2 use "gods". The 2 that use "gods" is the King James Version and the version you chose to display this verse Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition.
It really seems inconsistent to use the "gods" to translate this text as there are several verses surrounding this text referring to "gods" in very direct and clear commands to not give respect. Here are a few and you can make up your own mind what the overall context of the text is. all "gods" highlighted in red use 'elohiym

You shall not make other gods besides Me; gods of silver or gods of gold, you shall not make for yourselves.
Ex 23:13
Now concerning everything which I have said to you, be on your guard; and do not mention the name of other gods, nor let them be heard from your mouth.

You shall not worship their gods, nor serve them, nor do according to their deeds; but you shall utterly overthrow them and break their sacred pillars in pieces.
Ex 23:32
You shall make no covenant with them or with their gods.
Ex 23:33
They shall not live in your land, because they will make you sin against Me; for if you serve their gods, it will surely be a snare to you.
