I was just wanting to get a general consensus of what you guys think of a "white trash party" or "redneck party". The basic idea is that the guests would dress up as rednecks and there would be redneck decorations such as tacky lawn ornaments, etc. The food would be stuff like spam, hamburger helper, spray cheese, etc. And there would be themed prizes such as camoflage accessories, nascar memorabilia, etc.

What do you think, offensive party theme, or non-offensive and/or funny?

If you know of some fun party themes, please suggest them!

i think it's hilarious! I always thought dressing up as celebrities is fun or doing a "formal" dinner party

My friends once did a Mystery Dinner type thing and they each learned a part for this myster theater type game and then dressed up one night and acted out the parts and had a big formal dinner. That was really cool

okay so im going to be banned forever for saying this, and i am new, so forgive me for stepping on some toes. do you think that if Jesus were walking this earth right now he would be comfortable with labeling ppl white trash or rednecks? are we supposed to be judging others and giving them labels? doesnt God look at our inward appearance and not our outward anyway? arent we supposed to be striving for something a bit opposite than laughing and poking fun at others? as mentioned above i am new here and i dont want to insult others; instead, i would like to read what other christians have to say. so again, forgive me if i have angered you.

I think it would be a really funnt theme. If people don't like it they just need to build a bridge and get over it.

Ideas: Need to have it in a trailer home. Need to have at least three old, rusting cars in the front yard.

rrrRRRRAAAAGGE!!!

I'M BEYOND ANGRY.

Just kidding ananar23. First off welcome to the board.

You've got a good point, it was worth you sharing so it's good that you did. If anybody actually got upset about it they're probably wrapped too tight for discussions with other people. I'd like to think that God has a sense of humor, but who am I to say if He would find the party theme funny.

I agree with ananar23. I tend not to like television shows, movies, or get-togethers where entire groups of people are stereotyped. I think it fosters hate and ignorance between people and is not funny, especially when it comes from someone out of that ethnic group.

What made Jeff Foxworthy and his redneck jokes funny is that he himself was a Southerner poking fun good naturedly at himself and fellow Southerners. It would not have been funny coming from a Yankee.

Calling ppl white trash is in poor taste. They can't always help their circumstances.
I agree with Living4Him03 If you are a northern trying to pull this off it will be offensive to a southern person and might not go over well if a southern is doing it.

You probably could do a search for party themes on www.google.com and get some good ideas though.

Thank you for your opinions on the matter. That's why I posted...to get opinions...not just from people who agree with me.

Thank you for your comments.

I am from the south. I come from redneck stock. I think it's funny that I come from redneck stock. I kind of think of it as poking fun at myself more than anything--not at any specific person.

When I'm talking redneck, I'm talking the type of people who are portrayed on Jerry Springer...people who are proud of the way they're living. I don't consider someone who is poor or doesn't have nice things because of circumstances beyond their control to be white trash or rednecks. Really it's all about attitude.

At any rate, thanks for all the comments! I've enjoyed reading them. Keep them coming!

I am quite shocked to see the discussion that is going on here. Several of you say that you should not judge and the "red neck" theme is in poor taste....but yet you say it's "OK" if you or your guests are Southerners???? What does being a southerner have to do with being a "red neck" or "white trash"???? You are completely judging and stereotyping southerners here. There are thousands of people who live in the south who would not be coined as a "red neck" or "white trash".....and there are plenty of northerners who could be classified as such..... point is....if you want to claim that it is wrong to judge or label, think a bit more about how you may be doing that very thing you are saying is wrong....

Jen - I grew up among that culture in the north, though my parents and I are not of that culture (we were serving a church in western PA). It was a grievous thing to see how some people in the area exemplified the worst elements of the culture - the adultery, the murders due to adultery, the lying and stealing and fights and murders due to same, the regular drunkenness, the lack of wanting to care for anything or work for anything....

My paternal g'mas side of the family comes from that culture in the midwest, and my adopted g'pas family was there as well. My maternal g'ma was dirt poor but clean and hardworking and my adopted g'pa was a hardworking and honest man who got out of it. I thank God I didn't grow up there, because I easily could have. To have a party making making fun of such a culture as destroys lives...? Such a thing would be horrible from my background.

Even in our fun, what character traits should we exemplify?

I think that some people are going overboard in both directions here. What I mean is, personally, I think I know what spirit the theme is in, which is not a serious ridicule of lower-class, poor whites, and it really doesn't offend me, even though what is a "theme" for some is really a lot closer to my actual everyday experience, lol. And yet, without trying to be a kill-joy or anything, I think the other side has a point. In most people's view, only stereotypes of different segements of White culture are acceptable for these purposes, and it seems usually only white people engage in it, so it's sort of a self-parody. I rarely hear of blacks who want to throw "black welfare trash" parties or Latinos doing a "wetback" theme. Or Native Americans doing a "reservation rubbish" one. And you know that no white person (well, very few) would ever dream of doing this sort of parody of them, and probably vice-versa. So it seems it's only ok as long as you're razzing your own culture or the culture of those who are of the same race. But anyway, whites seem to be the only ones who have much interest in doing things like that in the first place. I wonder why. I think there's definitely some double-standards going on.

"White trash" would be offensive, "redneck" would not be offensive at all. One of my best friends is a redneck, and he's proud of it. He'd be the first to be at any redneck party. Fun games: shoot the can, bubble wrap popping race, fun with fire.

Um...just to clarify...this post was started back in December.

As it stands, nobody (that I know of) is planning on having a redneck party anymore, so the discussion is moot.

Please don't let a very old topic get you riled up. :)
Yeah People, welcome to last week... (j/k)
