  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Brandon,

I appreciate your application at the end, but it is not uniquely different than a modern audience can take from the original, so I think it is fair to say that the retelling is not justified by the application presented.

Also, if you are going to try to retell a story in order to make it relevant, then you must be in tough with how the details of the story work in the real world.

A lender in the business of funding houses, such as a bank or wealthy Californian, does not reserve any legal right to do the things you've described him threaten to do. He also doesn't have the right to simply give the person the house in any way that can be so easily reversed. He also cannot dramatically change the debt agreement decisions on these bases.

A person renting to another cannot evict with only one day's notice, even if the renter is two months late, and even if he can, he would need to have the sheriff do it. Also, there is not a judge in all of the state that will legally issue a restraining order that can keep the renter from the possessions that rightfully belong to him.

There are other problems with the relevance of this retelling, but I don't want it to sound like I don't appreciate the effort. Just remember that relevance is about familiarity and plausibility. While the mortgage bubble makes a story like this sound familiar, the details make it too improbable to really relate with.

Anyway, that's what I thought about it. I hope it helps you as you keep writing more.
