I'm looking for two sorts of books.

First, what are some good papal biographies? Most of the ones I've found are compilations that only give a few pages on each guy. I'm looking for earlier accounts, too (Leo, Gregory, etc.). I've found items for everyone from Pius XII forward. It gets tough when you try to go back farther than that.

Second, what is a good book on the history of the papal office? I'm wanting something less reliant on, say, Church Fathers, and more focused on what how each pope performed while in office.

Any recommendations?

I do not know much about what kind of scholarship has been done in this area, but J.N.D. Kelly's Oxford Dictionary of Popes has been useful to me. The information on each pope is only about half a page, but it covers everyone from Peter to John Paul II. If you'd like, I can send you an entry so you get a feel for the book.

For finding biographies of earlier popes I would reccommend reading the articles of the various popes in the Encylcopedia Britannica. The EB usually has several references and biographies on the subject after the aritcle itself. I've found some of the most interesting and scholarly books this way.

For the history of the office I reccommend Lives of the Popes: The Pontiffs from St. Peter to John Paul II by Richard P. McBrien.

From the Barnes & Noble site above:

"FROM THE PUBLISHER
Lives of the Pope is the most thorough, vivid, and fascinating history of the papacy available. Renowned Catholic commentator Richard McBrien offers a fresh, intelligent look at each of the 262 popes, including:- The Apostle Peter, the first pope, in his singular role as Vicar of Christ Formosus, the pope whose corpse was exhumed, dressed in full vestments, and subjected to a mock trial for papal misdeeds, Boniface, elected pope after having been defrocked twice for immorality, John XXIII, perhaps the most beloved pope in all of history. Lives of the Popes provides chronologically arranged biographies of the pontiffs, revealing the full sweep of the papacy. Each entry contains essential information on a pontiff’s life, major writings, controversies, and deeds both great and evil. McBrien eloquently and powerfully brings to life the unique stories of the popes and reveals how they transformed Christianity and the world."

I have the book and it is pretty interesting.

Another book is Bad Popes by Russell Chamberlin
