  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I like painting (not that I'm good at it)
I go to my friends house and we walk over the field and along the river and things and sketch together..then we go back to his house and experiment with different media.
I haven't found my favourite yet - and of course some things are really expensive, especially if you want to cover large areas or use paint thick.

I'm getting the hang of watercolour a bit better, and I like acrylic. I'd like to have a go at oils, but haven't had a hance yet.

I love pen and ink - sepia is nice, and of course you can do colour washes with it as well. I did book illustration for my art O Level at school, partly I think, because I also like reading!

I love to paint, I enjoy any mediums to paint with. Portraits not so great yet but improving. I also like to experiment, once I used sawdust on wet paint for a different look on a mountain scene. When dried, it looked cool, my son wanted the painting, he still has it.

Oh what a good idea! I'll have to try that. I think you can also use sand like that, though I've never tried it.

I have tried the sand thing before that was interesting - saw dust never occurred to me. :)

My favorite texture was the stuff acrylic paint has. First you paint one color, and then a thin coat of crackle (I think that's what it is called) and a then a different color is painted. It looks a lot like weathered wood. Sometimes if you work fast enough you can get a pretty decent shingle look to roofs.

how many people on here are painters? Which is your favourite type of paint to use and what do you like to paint.

I work with acrylics mostly. I like painting landscapes, but would love to learn how to paint people. I'm ok at drawing them, but painting them is much harder:)

I'm a painter :) I love working with oils right now. I use Rembrandt oils which have a buttery feel to them. The only downside to oils is the drying time. I want to try acrylics for the faster dry time.

You ever taken an art class?

There is a technique that they teach in basic art that a lot of self taught artist arn't familiar with. Which is the grid. Or you can use a light table.
Just about any art classroom you go into will have a light table that allows the students to trace out some more difficult lines. "if they have a need for it"
The lines are very important for catching depth.
Depending on your cash flow I would suggest the following.

Get a light table for starters. Just do a google search for light table and you'll find it easy enough.
Buy some vellum paper. Strathmore Artist Papers - Bristol and Illustration Board Fine Art Paper
Then switch to oils. Eh, I guess acrylics good too. But the texture of the paper wont be anything like canvas. Although I guess you could use canvas as well.
Take a pencil and trace out only the outlines of whatever portrait you're doing. Outlines meaning cheek and jaw structure as well as eyes, nose and lips. I know it sounds like cheating but after a little practice, you'll get an understanding of how portraits are done and wont need to trace any more.
And of course painting in your pencil lines will help. Which is actually more work then making the lines anyway.

Here's a charcoal I did in beginners drawing while in college. It's a Da Vinci I redid or copied.

I do a lot of drawing, I paint in acrylics and watercolors, I also use soft pastels. I have an acrylic painting of cardinals that I need to finish. I also started a watercolor of the Disney fairy Rosetta sitting on a rose. I draw some fan art, mostly Disney characters, the Disney princesses and now Disney fairies.
