"Among the Saxons, the Scriptures were made available in the Saxon tongue by King Athelstan ca. 940 who imposed fines for traffic on Sunday as it had been deemed to have replaced the Sabbath in the Roman system from the fourth century. The Sunday and Easter system had been imposed on Britain through the power of the Saxons from the Synod of Whitby in 663. Until then, most of Britain was Quarto-Deciman Sabbatarians. (cf. the paper The Quartodeciman Disputes (No. 277) http://www.logon.org/english/S/p277.html ). Edgar (ca. 960) declared that the day should be kept holy from 3 p.m. on Saturday to Monday at day-break (cf. Brady ibid., p. 103-104). Thus the preparation time on the Friday was transferred to the Saturday and an entirely new period of an extra twelve hours had been added again. This is the only known aberration of the extended day ending at dawn (aside from the worship of Ra in Egypt)."

"The Quartodeciman disputes were seen as pivotal to the determination of the Christian Faith. They were the second series of innovations to occur in the Christian church and perhaps the most fundamental. After Sunday worship had been introduced from Rome in the middle of the second century, the Roman system then set about introducing the pagan Easter system over the Passover. They finally succeeded in Britain in 664 at Whitby by force of arms in having the British or Celtic Church accept Easter."
