Overcoming Depression
I originally posted this in the depression section but most who have cutting issues also have depression.
This thread is long but I can't help anyone with 1 or 2 paragraphs.
I just overcame depression with the help of Jesus 2 & 1/2 months ago. I became a Christian in 2002. Before becoming a Christians I was heavily involved in Secular Heavy Metal, drugs and alcohol, I was a skinhead, I was involved in lifting weights and had a lot of physical pride since I am 6'7" tall and weigh 350 pounds. Not only did I suffer from depression but I also had Paranoid Schizophrenia, split-personality disorder, anxiety attacks, bi-polar mood swings and I was just a really demented person. I was involved in various forms of self mutilation as well. I overcame it all by turning my entire life to Jesus. I have been off medication for 8 months and Jesus is my new psychologist.
Medication will help us cope with our daily struggles but they don't solve the problem. They are only preventive techniques. The other problem with medication is when we start doing good we stop taking our medication and when we have a bad day we fall even harder. Then the levels are all messed up and there are alot of side effects. My mind used to be mush and I slept at least 12 hours a day. I was a zombie. Only Jesus can give us full deliverance from mental illness.
I didn't grow up in church and developed this intimidation factor. This is what I got off on and when I became a Christian I had to give that up. It took 3 years to do it. When you become a Christian the only way to recover and grow in your new life is to turn from the old and start the new. It takes time and the hardest thing to do is to break away from your friends that aren't believers. By continuing to hang out with them you playing with fire and you may get burned. When I say getting burned I mean the temptation of past sin that could entice you and draw you away from your walk.
When I first became a Christian I gave it all up but my friends and the devil used them to drag me back down. It was hard to give them up because I felt guilty that I turned my back on them and I had known them for so long and they were my family. The one thing to think about is life on earth is a flash in the pan compared to eternity in heaven or even worse eternity in hell. We either go to one or the other. We don't become ghosts or are reincarnated or any of that kind of deception.
Jesus knows we are struggling with depression and he knows how to love us and nurture us through it. We have to have faith in him and perservere through the trials. There will be days of great joy and days of struggle. Just don't give up because he sees everything we do and the Holy Spirit is here to be our comforter. He is omni-present and can talk and comfort everyone on earth at the same time. It really blows your mind about the power of the Holy Trinity but their all-surpassing power is the only way to overcome depression.
Romans 12 is the most important step in recovery. 1 In view of Gods mercy we need to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God for this is our spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve of God's will. His Good, Pleasing, Perfect will.
Salvation is the first step, faith and trust is the second, and sacrificing our bodies to be led by the spirit of Jesus is the third. When I say sacrifice our body it means to realize that without the spirit of God (Holy Spirit) we can't make it here on earth as Christians. The spirit is righteous meaning it is always right and never wrong. The flesh is sin so by crucifying the flesh we can be led by the spirit. Crucifying the flesh means turning from the desires of the flesh. Meaning instead of doing what I want to do I will do what the spirit wants me to do. Instead of watching tv all the time I will read the bible or fellowship. Start by setting up at least 1 hour a day for reading in the word.
Do not comform to the pattern of the world means not to chase after the desires of the world but to chase after Jesus. WE need to be God Chasers and not World chasers. WE have to live in this world but put the desires of the spirit of Jesus first and then participate in the world with a chrisitian outlook.
Then be transformed by the renewing of our minds. We need to retrain our thought patterns to be led by the spirit and not the flesh. Let's make righteous decisions and not sinful decisions. Renewing your mind is done from Jesus through the Holy Spirit. When we come to salvation the Holy Spirit enters are heart and starts to rebuild it. He breaks it down. when we cry as Christians it isn't bad. It just shows Jesus that we can't make it here without his spirit in us and then the Holy Spirit will comfort us and build us back up.
Then we will be able to test and approve of God's good, pleasing, perfect will. The spirit is righteous and can cure all of your mental illness. We have to show faith in Jesus for he is in control and he will never forsake us. He is in heaven right now making intercessions with father God for us. He knows we will fail but that is why he died on the cross. His death freed us of all past, present, and future sins. We can't willfully sin for it grieves the spirit but when we do sin his unending mercy forgives us all. Jesus is number 1 and he can help you to. ON earth his will is the right way always and if we choose to be led by the spirit we can share in the fruits of the spirit and share in his glory. We will always face some persecution from the world but we have to remain strong and perservere through these times.
Depression is hard to get over for we crave our past lives and alot of the sinful things we desired. If anyone has turned everything over to Jesus yet I would encourage it asap. WE can hide things from other members of the body but Jesus sees everything we do and knows are every thought. If we try to hold on to something that grieves the spirit of Jesus he can't fully heal us for that thing that we hold onto gives the enemy a foothold in your life which usually leads to a stronghold.
Satan is the Father of Lies and he comes as an angel of light to deceive us. He will constantly make you feel guilty of past sins and try to make you have doubts of your faith in Christ. All he wants to do is break us down and deceive us. If a thought is 99 % right and 1 % wrong then the whole thought is corrupt. He will also accuse you of being unworthy for the kingdom of God.
Remember Romans 8:37 And we are more than conquerors in all of these things through him who loves us. Jesus
2 Thesalonians 3:3 The Lord our God is Faithful, he will strengthen us and protect us from the enemy.
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Also Read Ephesians chapter 6. It talks about the Full Armor of God. This is are spiritual protection from the schemes and deception of the enemy. So put on your Full armor of God and stand in confidence that you have protection from the enemy and his fallen angels.
Turn your depression over to Jesus and let him conquer it for you.
