Greetings friends,
God has recently renewed my thirst for His word, reminding me about how important and effective it is to our walk with Him. I am going to outline many of the reasons we should want to memorize scripture, that we are commanded to memorize not just for the sake of a better life in Christ, which should be motivation enough, but that in doing so, our lives will be better off overall.
The word of God is a weapon against temptation, in Matthew 4:4 when tempted by Satan, Jesus quoted scripture by saying, "It is written:" some people (especially non-believers) have trouble thinking that there is power in something that comes out of a book, but it's much more than that, it's the spoken word of God. In Deut 6:6-9; Prov 3:1; Prov 7:2,3; Prov 22:17-19 we are COMMANDED to know the word of God. 3 of the commands come out of the book of proverbs written by the wisest man who ever lived, Solomon, who also had a very close relationship with God.
(John 14:21; Job 23:12; Jer 15:16; Matt 4:1-11) clearly show that our attitude toward God's word, reflects the relationship we have with Him. Some motivation to "hide God's word in our hearts" is found in these passages [Prov 8:35; Phil 4:8; Psalms 119:9-1; Acts 20:32; John 14:21; Col 3:16; Psalms 119:105; Psalms 119:165; John 17:12-17; 1Tim 4:7; Prov 4:4,5; 2Tim 2:15; Prov 12:25; Titus 1:9; Matt 4:1-11)
Jesus said in John 14:15 "If you love me, obey my commands" Jesus commanded us to memorize scripture, if you don't, maybe you don't love Christ as much as you thought.
I love you all!
In Christ,
Matt
