  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Read Luke 16.
Which side of the great gulf does Abraham belong to?

Read Hebrews 11.
Which side of faith are the OT members described there listed upon?

Read the Gospel accounts of the Transfiguration.
Do Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus, or with Satan?

Read Psalm 23.
Which house will David dwell in forever?

Read Psalm 73.
When the Lord receives Asaph into glory, where is that?

Perhaps those biblical accounts of the OT faithful will help you see the answer to your question.

Thanks Dave, I was looking for a Dispensational view point on this issue. As a five pointer, this issue is settled for me already.

No, an honest one. If the believe is now secure because of the Holy Spirit, what happened to the OT saints...were they secure?
Yes they are. I really don't see a lot of relevance to the question. There are no OT saints left living today. So, would you think that somebody could pass the impassable gulf after death? On what basis?

How were they secure, on what basis is a believer secure?

I didn't say "were secure" but "are secure".

A believer is secure based on the finished work of Christ and true faith in that work: he has passed from death to life, on this side of death. OT saints cannot pass from death to life (or the reverse) because they have already died a long time ago.

That is like asking if one passes a sobriety test, Are they Drunk?

All SAINTS are secure, or they wouldn't be called SAINTS.

God Bless.

Not really. Let me re-work the question a little...did they (believers in the OT) know they were eternally secure like the believers know they are now?

PS: Most dispensationalists deny that OT believer were regenerated, and the the covenant theology tells us they were...so if the OT believer wasn't regenerated, how did they know they were secure?

Yes, they may not have known that they were, as many NT saints do not either, but Yes they were, yet the "price" of thier righteousness had yet to be paid, that price being paid by way of the shed blood of Christ.

They did not have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. And indeed there are many who are indwelt with/by the Holy Spirit today who don't know/believe that they are secure, is this not so?

Something can be true even if no one believes it, it is defined as such by God. Eternal security is defined by God, even if no one believes it, it doesn't affect its reality. Now the OT believers may not have understood eternal security, but today they would be the best witnesses of if, I would say!
