I've been doing some study on both of these doctrines and found many differences I didn't know existed. Could someone more learn then I (that's means almost anyone :D ), offer a post with some detail about how they are different?

If not, perhaps a link?

God bless,

SP

Yes , Hi Street Preacher

They are different .......... the best I think you will ever find is A W Pink , when you read the first 2 chapters of his book you will doubt if Pink even believes in the security of Salvation (he does) ......... here is a link to his masterpiece online .....

Good Day, SP

What have you found? In talking with the OSAS types they shy away from the Perseverance title do to Calvin. Then it all ways interseting to give them Augustine's work on the subject.

Peace to u,

Bill

Perseverance of the Saints from the LBCF 1689

Those whom God hath accepted in the beloved, effectually called and sanctified by his Spirit, and given the precious faith of his elect unto, can neither totally nor finally fall from the state of grace, but shall certainly persevere therein to the end, and be eternally saved, seeing the gifts and callings of God are without repentance, whence he still begets and nourisheth in them faith, repentance, love, joy, hope, and all the graces of the Spirit unto immortality; and though many storms and floods arise and beat against them, yet they shall never be able to take them off that foundation and rock which by faith they are fastened upon; notwithstanding, through unbelief and the temptations of Satan, the sensible sight of the light and love of God may for a time be clouded and obscured from them, yet he is still the same, and they shall be sure to be kept by the power of God unto salvation, where they shall enjoy their purchased possession, they being engraven upon the palm of his hands, and their names having been written in the book of life from all eternity.

Once Saved, Always Saved is a crass renaming of the Reformed doctrine called, "Perseverance of the Saints". Simply put, this doctrine (POTS) declares that those God has brought to saving faith will, by His power, will, and persistence, persevere to the end in faith and obedience. In fact, it would be better to call this doctrine the "Preservation of the Saints" because it is principally God's work on our behalf that is in view.

The reason that the terminology, "Once Saved, Always Saved", is not favored (at least in Reformed circles .. ;) ) is that it seems to speak to the possibility of perpetual careless living by the Saints of God, if they so choose to live. But this is something that the Reformed doctrine (POTS) never intended, nor allows for. Instead, it speaks to the ongoing work of true Believers who persist in their faith, behind which is the very present power and will of Christ to do so. Here is an excerpt concerning this doctrine from the Westminster Confession of Faith:

They, whom God hath accepted in his Beloved, effectually called, and sanctified by his Spirit, can neither totally nor finally fall from the state of grace, but shall certainly persevere therein to the end, and be eternally saved. (XVII.1)

Yours and His,
David
