Here in (Montréal) Québec, it is not uncommon to find people with names of mixed gender.
For example a man named Pierre-Marie, or a woman named Marie-Pierre. It is somewhat unusual in other provinces, to be sure, but the same tradition exists among Catholics in Ireland, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal, among other nations. The famous atheist Voltaire, for example, was named François-Marie.
I am unable to find an example of a Greek man with Mary (Maria) somewhere in his name. The closest I've come is an Albanian man named George-Marie.
I wonder if anyone knows of a Greek Orthodox example of this phenomenon of men named Mary.
Does anyone know of any tradition of this kind among the Eastern Orthodox Churches in general, past or present?
Thanks
