There is a lot of good history out there without following the Catholic line of thought! Before I began to study Christian History, I deeply studied the Bible to get a firm understanding to what true Christianity really was. Then as I studied Church History I was able to see the difference between false Christianity and what is true. Just because those that asserted power over others and became head of the so-called Church, did not make them godly leaders. These became tyrants that controlled the weaker churches. My point is that the Catholics at a very early start gained control of other churches and eventually had the power to control all the churches. I don't see this as the Church that the LORD set up before He returned to the Father. The Catholics turned away from salvation through faith alone to a salvation by being baptized into the Catholic Church. These followers of the religious Catholic Church, Origen, Jerome and others just followed in the same way. It doesn’t matter how intelligent a person is, if they are not transformed by the power of the Spirit through faith in Christ. These Catholic Church fathers might sound impressive with their abilities of speech and thought, but without the supernatural work of grace in their spirits, they cannot understand spiritual matters. As I read from them and about them, I don't think they lived godly lives, nor do I think they have written godly materials. We see that the early Church was not enamored be scholarly people; in fact, because of their pride they would not see their need for Christ… We see that with the religious leaders during Jesus’ ministry here and with the Corinthian Church, in 1 Cor. 1&2. If we search carefully, we will find pockets of true believers all through history that resemble the Church that Christ set up.

wow.... Those are some very strong statements about some giants of Christianity. I think you need to look a little more into History before make such over arching judgements. The Bible did not fall from Heaven on a beam of light. Looking into the early church might help shed some light on the issue.

Was it true that these key players in early Christianity struggle with addictions to sex and women?

I've been reading their "biographies" (or at least what we believe we know about their lives) and I've come across these surprising details.

Has anyone else heard of this?

No, I have not heard of this. It sounds like you have been reading popular histories that like to trump up the selacious gossip about their subjects. Origen has been accused of many other things but not sexual addiction as far as I know. Jerome had several wealthy widows and noblewomen that were his patrons but I have never heard of impropriety between them.

Wow, sounds like you have been reading J. M. Carroll's Trail of Blood. How can you buy into it? It has been debunked on so many levels and not just by Roman Catholic apologists.
