OOC: Nar Gwathren [PM to join]
firstly - this RPG is certainly open to new writers. It kind of died two years ago, but I love my characters too much to give it up forever. If you wish to join, PM me!
This is the OOC thread for any and all discussion relating to Nar Gwathren the RPG. For the RPG itself, click here: http://www.christianforums.com/t81819
This RPG is semi-scripted, so it follows a basic plotline already laid down. However, don't let this stop anyone from joining. However, it mainly follows the books, and not the movies. This means that a few details are different.
Please PM me before joining, or for information.
Basic outline: (before, during and after the War of the Ring)
The RPG follows the story of Lothíriel, escaped thrall and lost daughter of Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth. It also follows the individual stories of her friends and companions. They will travel through many countries - Mordor to an extent, Gondor, Rohan, Northwards through elven-lands, and then West to the Grey Havens.
What has happened so far:
The RPG started with Lothíriel escaping from the tower of Minas Morgul, where she had been imprisoned for nineteen years, since birth. Taking advantage of the diversion her escape created, another thrall escaped - Cavsor. Seperately, they stole horses and rode to Osgiliath, pursued by the Nazûl. In Osgiliath it was discovered that Lothíriel had taken a serious wound, and the Elf-healer Pendai took her with all speed to Minas Tirith, captial of Gondor. There Cavsor came after a short while. Lothíriel had a bad case of the Black Breath, a sickness that the Nazgûl can lay upon others. It took many months for Lothíriel to recover, and when she did her true identity was discovered. Terribly stubborn and independant, she left the city to evade being taken to her father. In Dol Amroth (a princedom, or region of Gondor ruled by a Prince who was under the ultimate rule of the Steward or King) her father received the news and one of her brothers left to find her.
The Elf-lord Glorfindel left Rivendell after helping to save Frodo at the Fords of Bruinen. His original intent was unknown, but when he passed through Rohan, he found a village ravaged by a band of Easterlings, enemies of Gondor and Rohan. Thinking that he might receive aid in Gondor from the Steward Denethor, he rode with all speed down the Great West Road with a wounded girl he discovered in the ruin. He received no aid, but when taking the girl to the healers he came at whiles to Pendai the healer. Both being elves, he informed her of what he'd seen in Rohan. While they were discussing this, Avarielle the Gondorian happened upon them, as well as Cavsor. Cavsor informed them that Lothíriel had fled from Minas Tirith.
Pendai realized that Lothíriel was taking the road that Easterlings were ambushing. Glorfindel agreed to go with Pendai to find Lothíriel, as did Avarielle and Cavsor. They caught up with her at the Firien Wood. The Rohirrim, led by Eomer, had driven the Easterlings back, but in doing so had driven them right into Lothíriel's path. Trapped, Lothíriel managed to evade them until just as the Rohirrim arrived, but was wounded with a poisoned sword in the process. Pendai's group arrived in the midst of battle, and took Lothíriel to Edoras to recover.
While in Edoras, several of the company managed to offend Grima Wormtongue deeply, and were banised under penalty of death. This coincided with Eomer's own banishment, and so the company left with his éored, heading north in an attempt to intercept a company of orcs that were coming down from Fangorn - the same one that Merry and Pippen were held captive by.
Character Creation: Races
You may create a character in any race you choose, though preferably human. Elves are also completely acceptable, although the story mainly revolves around a 'human' plot. Please PM me your character's bio before you join. As a side note, characters from the books can be used, as long as you PM for exclusive writing privaleges. That means that that particular character becomes yours to write. If a character has not been 'adopted', then he/she remains an NPC with special requirements ... 'book' characters must be written in such a manner that the do not diverge from their actions and character in the books.
Humans:
- GONDORIANS: Men and women from the realm of Gondor are usually tall and dark-haired, the remnant of ancient Númenor. In the higher bloodlines, as with the Stewards and many of his lords, they still live longer than most men. However, most Gondorians have lost that gift. They are a mostly grim race, although still quite powerful. Gondorians live mostly in Minas Tirith, or in the lands South of the Ered Nimrais (White Mountains). They are ruled by a Steward in place of a King, until one should claim the throne again.
Language: Westron, a mannish speech much enriched and softened under the old Elvish influence (Sindarin). The royal names of Gondor were all given in the High-elven speech, Quenya, learned by the high houses.
- ROHIRRIM: The Rohirrim are generally tall and golden-haired, lithe and wonderful horse-riders. They are fair-skinned and are merry, though they delight in arms and battle. They are akin to the Gondorians from even before most left for Númenor, and are staunch allies to the land of Gondor. They are ruled by the King Théoden, who has fallen under the control of Saruman the wizard, poisoned by his counsellor Gríma.
Language: Rohirric, a language very akin to Old English. However, the people of Rohan also speak Westron after their own fashion, for use in trade and dealings with Gondor.
- OTHER (Men of Dale, Men of Bree, Dunlendings, Drúadan): On the whole, these humans are mostly unsuitable for this RPG, although I'm sure I'd accept them if there was valid reason for them to be heading far enough South to join Lothíriel's group. Men of Dale are supposed to descend from the same ancestors as the Rohirrim, although they look more like Gondorians.
Language: Westron, although altered by seperation from other Western countries.
- EASTERLINGS (Rhûnim, Khandings): Characters of this race would most probably not come into this RPG, although defectors are always welcome.
Enemies of Gondor and the entire West, Easterlings were traditionally either black, brown or red-haired. They have pale skin and dark brown eyes for the most part. Little is known of them, but they are men who never mingled with the elves in the past ages, and stayed East of Mordor until Morgoth poisoned them and Sauron called them. They are fierce fighters and seldom surrender alive. They used advanced weaponry, even as the Gondorians - metal armor, although twisted into foreign shapes; bows and arrows carven from wood or metal; siege towers and mechanical devices to bring down walls.
Language: Eastron, which is completely dissimilar to its Western counterpart, as they never mingled with the elves. It instead takes more after the Black Speech of Mordor. They also learn the Black Speech for dealings with Mordor, and Westron in dealings with other countries.
- SOUTHRONS (Haradrim, Corsairs of Umbar): These humans share in little of Gondor's history, but Sauron threatened their people and put evil men into power over them. He forced them to be his servants, although they little desired to fight. They have mostly dark hair, and dark skin from the bright Southern Sun. Southrons dress mostly in rags, as they have been abused by Sauron, and they use weapons of wood, bone, stone and copper. Some of their warriors are transported by Mamûkil, or Oliphants. After the War of the Ring , when freed from Sauron, they formed alliance with King Aragorn Elessar.
Language: It is unknown, although they speak Westron well enough.
Eldar (Elves):
- VANYAR (High-elves): None of these Elves ever returned to Middle-earth after the Great Journey to Valinor, and are but a rumor in Middle-earth.
- NOLDOR (Considered High-elves in Middle-earth): Tall and fair, with light hair and eyes for the most part, there are few remaining in Middle-earth. Many of the Noldor rebelled against the Valar and left Valinor, returning to rule many lands in Middle-earth. However, the original Dark Lord, Morgoth, hunted them and virtually destroyed them. Sauron, the second Dark Lord, drove them mostly from Middle-earth, back over the Sea. The few who do remain are considered the ruling-elves, lords and high folk among the Sindar.
Language: Sindarin, the language of the Grey-elves. Only the highest folk remember Quenya, after it was banned by the great Elf-king of Beleriand, Thingol.
- TELERI (Grey-elves; Sindar, Moriquendi): Elves who never left Middle-earth on the Great Journey. They have dark hair and fair skin for the most part. Contrary to legend, they are not evil, simply 'elves of the twilight', who never saw the light that was before the Sun. They are less intelligent than the Noldor for the most part, although the Sindar exceed them in deeds of legend. The Teleri are said to be able to sing the birds off branches. The Moriquendi are a mostly secretive and solitary people, living deep in forests away from the Sun, rejoicing in the Moon.
Language: Sindarin, although enriched with several words from Quenya.
Other:
- HOBBITS (Halfings, Holbytlan, Periann): A merry folk living in the Shire, a region that was once part of the Kingdom of Arnor. Their history is unknown, save that they fled from the shadow in the East. They are not often over three-foot-six, which is considered quite tall. Only three ever grew over four feet tall - the Bullroarer, Meriadoc Brandybuck and Perigrin Took. They are not bulky like dwarves, but slender and with short curly hair. They vary as much as humans today, but all wore bright colors. They possess no magic, but are incredibly quick and accurate with stone-throwing.
Language: Westron, although altered with many of their own names and their own calendar.
- ENTS (Tree-herders): An ancient power that was requested by Yavanna the Vala to protect her precious trees against the axe. They have a history so long that little is remembered, but they associate only with elves in the recent days. Their appearance is like to the tree of their origin, so a Rowan is different from an Oak as much as a Willow is from a Maple.
Language: Old Entish, which is similar to Elvish, although so complicated it takes hours to say anything of value.
- MAIA/VALAR: These races are not suitable for this RPG, although perhaps for a sequel. The Valar are the highest of the Maiar, and all are creatures created by Eru to shape Middle-earth to his purpose. They are the Tolkien equivalent of angels, although most dwell in Valinor, in Aman.
- WIZARDS: The wizards of Middle-earth (Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, the Blue Wizards) are actually Maiar sent to Middle-earth to bring council to Men and Elves, at the time when the Elves were leaving Middle-earth. Their purpose was to council without a display of power as the previous Maiar had done, but to influence more subtly. They appear as old men, already bent with the weight of years. They do not age, but may appear to do so slightly as cares affect them. Saruman dresses in robes of white, or does so originally. Gandalf is clad in Gray, at first. Radagast left the order of Wizards and contented himself with learning about and caring for animals; he wears brown.
Language: Any and all.
If there is any other race that someone wishes to create a character as, please PM me and I'll add it to the list. However, there shall be no orcs or baddies travelling with Lothíriel, nor is it an RPG about leading armies, although armies are involved.
Characters and authors:
Kookaburra [ACTIVE]: Lothíriel; Éomer
DARRIONS [ACTIVE]: Avarielle
Cyberwing [ACTIVE]: Sianowyth, Haldir, Orophin, Rumil
God'schild [INACTIVE]: Pendai; Glorfindel
Blessed-one [INACTIVE]: Cavsor
NPCs: all other 'book' characters.
Side note: Unless there is a really, super good reason, all of the Fellowship is off limits.
For any more information or to correct any small details I got wrong, please PM me.
