The company gathered at the river bank and looked at their leader, the man that had led them all this way. Blood stained the river as he stood bent over it's waters, hands on his stomach where his cloak was ripped open by a sword. Bodies laid motionless around the party, their demon faces twisted in horror of their last breaths. It was to here that they chased them, and to here that the demons held their last stand. Their hold, called the Catacombs by those that were alive when the dungeon was built, was before them, and was where they led the party by mistake. Their leader regarded it as a part of their stupidity.
A bridge arched from one side of the river to the other, a solid-looking bridge made of neat stone blocks. Moss grew up the sides near the base, and weeds stuck up out of the crevices on the walkway. A small door no more than six and a half feet in height stood open under one side of the bride, facing the river. A demon had tried to get in it, but its body now laid sprawled on the river bed.
The party's leader fell to his knees, blood staining his gray cloak, and a deep, long gash opening his stomach. It was not deep enough to spill his innards, but enough to pronounce death. He was the only one there that was strong enough in the magics to heal such a wound, but he was too weak. His eyes closed as he concentrated one last time, but had no energy. His strength was almost gone, but he turned to the others still.
"Go on without me," he forced out in a ragged voice. "We have come to far to turn back, and the enemy is already after us. By nightfall they will arrive where we stand, but if you go in you they will likely not find you."
The company pondered the words. This was where their adventure led, their quest to discover the Scrolls of the Ethereal that were fabled to rest deep beneath the earth surface. The Catacombs was where Erick Guersan was said to have taken it before he died, the place the creatures Man called demons inhabited since three years before, the place whose door stood open before them.
"Go." their leader commanded. He went by many names, but the one that they knew him by was Gylem. His hands felt at the wound on his stomach, and in agony his eyes squeezed shut as pain pulsed through his body. He was weakening. "Retrieve the Scroll."
Some of the party members tried to protest, but he waved them to silence. "You are the last hope for the Scroll. You must go in. There will likely be no demons there, due to the war in the East, but be on your guard for both monsters and for traps. Devious things are said to be within, and the place of many deaths because of an unwary step onto a trap floor. A fit name for a place such as this." He smiled weakly. "Go. You must promise me." As tears rolled from some of the company's eyes, some nodded.
With that, he lowered himself slowly to the muddy riverbank and breathed his last breath. The party was here, at the dawn of their actual quest, the test that would try them with their leader now lost.
Game System: This is not a freestyle rpg, unlike the majority of rpgs on this site. The game will utilize the GURPS system. For those of you entirely new to the game, you can download the Lite version here. The books that will be used are the following: GURPS Basic Set 3rd or 4th Edition, Compendium I, Compendium II, Psionics, Martial Arts, Bestiary, and Fantasy Bestiary. Cinematics will not be allowed, such as cinematic skills, advantages, and disadvantages.
Campaign Setting:
The game will be set in the medieval fantasy genre, similar to the classic fantasy genre. In GURPS, the Tech Level is 3.
Character Points: 150 points max.
Race, Class, & Alignment: First of all, I would like my characters to be human. If you wish to play something else that is relatively "normal" to the genre, namely Elves and Dwarves, please bring it up and we can work something out. Class-wise, I would like if the players work together when creating the party, and try to make a diverse group. If there is already a mage, rogue, and archer, consider the warrior. I know that there are no real classes in GURPS, but I am just using the word to show what I mean. Lastly, your characters may be of Neutral or Good, but nothing Evil.
Character Concept: Include some background on your history, personality and tendencies. Provide a description as to what you look like (body features, what are you wearing, and weapons and other items carried, within the GURPS rules).
Starting Gold: 1500 gold pieces per character as the base, which may change based on their Wealth Level, and you may purchase whatever you want from the Basic Set, Compendium II, and Martial Arts.
Game Start: Please get me your character sheets to me as soon as possible because I may have some questions. Post the characters in the Character Forum and post a link here. You don’t need to complete your entire character concept right away before starting.
Use this thread to introduce yourself as a player, and tell us a bit about the character you will be playing. Introduce your character (in-character) in the game thread when it begins.
If you have any questions about character generation or what I will allow, ask here or send me a PM.
All characters must first be approved of by the GM (me). I am very open to different concepts, what I'm looking for is characters that will add character to the campaign.
As a note on my GMing style, it will be important for you to read carefully what I write. This will not be a vanilla campaign of hack and slash with easily identified enemies who will stand in front of you for a fair fight. Also, there will be a good share of the traps and encounters that you may need to the think out, as well as the puzzles and such that are present in the classic dungeon campaigns. That being said, I want everyone to survive, prosper, and enjoy themselves!
In your Character Concept I want to know the motivations and interests of your character, and some of its history. I will try to incorporate as much of that as possible into the game.
Thanks for your participation, good luck and good gaming!
