  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

There are a few, but you can learn a lot more through self study. A great place to start is www.photo.net

The NY Institute of Photography is a decent program, although it is what you make of it. It's not stellar, but teaches you the basics.

What type of photography do you enjoy? People? Nature? Macro? I can tailor my response a bit better if I know what direction you want to go in.

Also, what type of camera are you shooting with? Most courses are geared toward the use of a digital SLR camera with lenses that you can change, although it's not really necessary if your camera offers some form of manual control.

THere are some excellent books on the market, too.

Well, in that case, you should really check out www.photo.net

It's free. Sometimes you need to wade through meaningless posts, but you can learn a ton.

I'm a professional photographer, and I shoot people full time. I can confidently say that photo.net gave me a pretty good foundation. You can check out everything from the lighting forum, to image critiques, to wedding and portrait photography. I believe there were some sports photography related posts out there as well.

You should also think about attending seminars on specifc techniques. Like using off camera flash, environmental portraiture, etc. Sometimes they get a bit pricey, but you can learn as much real world knowledge as you would in a college course that costs 3X more.

Anyway, it's late and I am tired. Still have to finish editing a beach engagement session from late yesterday afternoon. I shouldn't even be on CF, LOL!

I like to take pictures of people, sports and nature. I have a Nikon D50.
Hey there! I just got a D50 also. GREAT camera! :) I'm not familiar with any good online classes, but do frequent photo.net. I'd also recommend the "Nikon D50 Digital Field Guide" book by David Busch. It's a fairly comprehensive guide to the camera, it's capabilities and who to shoot various styles. It's available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc.

Before you take any classes I would recommend you wait until you've shot a decent amount of pictures.

And SHOOT IN MANUAL MODE! Way too many people are scared of getting out of the different auto modes. If you're going to shoot in auto mode (any of them, portrait, landscape, action, etc.) you may as well go buy a point and shoot.

Find any subject, your keyboard, a rock on a sidewalk... anything. Study your manual to learn the indications for a "properly exposed" image. Then sit there and change your shutter speed one stop (or click) at a time in one direction, and then the other. Do the same with the apeture. Then go back to your computer and see how they all work together. See how shutter speed affects apeture, and vise-verse.

The biggest thing I would recommend is that you learn how to properly expose an image in whatever way YOU want... not just how the camera does it.

After you're somewhat comfortable with that, then move on to things like apeture priority and shutter priority.

For my photos I only shoot in manual, mostly shutter priority, and next would be apeture priority.

I've never taken a photo class in my life. Just done it all by trial and error, along with continual critiques by other professionals.
