I wrote about Gregorian chants I like, and while I think that the album this comes from is outstanding, this instance is a rare occasion where this particular hymn is kind of unsettling to listen to. It is probably not supposed to be this way, but it is for me. The voices are very good and Gregorian Chant is actually my "refuge" from the secular music I used to listen to, and I wouldn't trade those places for anything, but why does this one kind of bother me to listen to?

It is not that I don't like the melody - it's just that unlike all the other GC hymns I have listened to, this one hurts to listen to.

Hmmm. I always look for a spiritual meaning in responses. The song is about coming out of darkness into the light.
From reading your posts, I sense that you love God and earnestly desire to serve Him, yet your life is filled with those that wish to hold you back
You are reading a crossroads in your life and spirits of darkness may be causing you pain to distract you from your love of God. They say the light will hurt, stay with us in darkness: I am thinking that because spirits can affect our emotions. They cannot control our thoughts but will cause you confusion with feelings

I would recommend that you pray a devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows. Mary will show you why you hurt if you ask her. She often does this with an Our Lady of Sorrows devotion. If you can’t do that, I would recommend the book Deliverance Prayers for the Laity.

You need to find why this is happening.

Do not be embarrassed if you are oppressed by spirits. Some of the most holy people have been afflicted. Paul especially had a spirit which caused him pain, he wanted it taken away but God said My Grace is sufficient for you

Peace be with you, and you are in my prayers

Well gee, after realizing what the hymn really means, maybe I should put this CD back in my car and crank it up so that everyone at the red light can hear it in the car. :)

I still have a problem with the feeling that the voices on this CD are more melancholy than some of the other monks on other Gregorian Chant CDs, but I'm really sensitive to that sort of thing.

I found it hard to understand the words. There is a lot of reverb from the place where they sang or maybe the production processes, making all the vowels hard to discern. (But maybe my hearing is just going bad)

Elwood Blues: No, ma'am, we're musicians ... We're on a mission from God.

I'm very sensitive to anything I perceive as melancholy or eerie. :|
