"You Can’t Pay Me Enough To Do It": People Over 40 Are Revealing The Things They Are Simply "Too Old" To Deal With Anymore
"I've never had a problem with it in previous years — but this past fall, I was honestly offended."
This article is an interesting read, as it is a social commentary on all the
things that some people think DON'T WORK in modern American society.
But, I would add some more... and some things to pursue.
23 Email messages (or text messages, or voice messages) on my phone.
I don't want ANY messages on my phone, that are not live voice conversations.
Otherwise, I become a slave of answering every gossip or business contact
out there. For my generation, this slavery to a pager, is a slavery endured by
managers only, but despised by real workers.
24 I don't understand ordering groceries on your phone, so that you can
pick them up (without wandering around a store). Why would you have to
commit to a fixed list of groceries, instead of wandering around and
looking at everything the store has to offer?
25 The "sad girl" table of books at Barnes and Noble.
Or, the "bulgy boy" mystery/spy section.
Or, the conspiracy theory section for people who can't think.
I am finding that many online book club members are increasingly starting
to read books, and finding out that they are "trash". How can American
authors and publishers (and reviewers) put out so much trash???
Why can't book reviewers use explicit categories for books reviewed,
that explicitley note when a book falls into the trashy 500 word vocabulary
book?
26 Why don't people start to grow their own vegetables, in containers?
Get in touch with the seasons.
Give yourself physical work, that is an occaision for thinking.
Plant trees and flowers. Try growing sunflowers from black oil sunflower
seed bird seed. That is, 50 or 100 plants.
Try buying composted steer manure when it is on sale at WalMart for
$1.50 a bag. Grow stuff. It's on sale, right now!
Create a place to read outside, in shade, trees, and flowers.
27 Drive a regular car, that is already paid off. You used to be able to
get a 4-door that would get 40 miles per gallon. You can laugh at the
gas prices, and avoid paying a second mortgage on a jacked up truck
or SUV.
Try not washing your car, for 6 months.
28 Try surfing thrift-books, for substantial textbooks that no one wants
to read. Read across disciplines. Start a (book) library.
29 Take your dog to a dog park. Learn how to train your dog.
Learn how to pick up, after everyone's dog.
30 Start writing on specific topics. Integrate your writing with your
reading. Learn vocabulary. Find people to review your writing, and
discuss topics. Find online discussion forums, and get involved.
Discuss books.
In America, we have great financial opportunity. But, we waste it
on trying to buy massive houses that are 3 time bigger than we need,
and we (essentially) take out a second mortgage to buy jacked up
pickup trucks or SUVs. We impoverish ourselves, intellectually, because
we financially enslave ourselves, to gain shallow trappings of success.
What is needed, is a brand new counter culture to the electronic screen
slavery.
