• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi Bonnie

I think there are two kinds of people who go through what you're going through. One group can see they are drinking too much and easily cut back without it creeping back up over the following months. The other group (to which I belong) struggle constantly to control their drinking until they realize they really can't, and that abstinence is the only way for them. I have to say that I now absolutely love abstinence and couldn't bear the thought of going back to drinking. Only you can really know which group you belong to, but there is tons of support once people realize they are in the group who can't moderate drinking long-term. It's a very big group of people!

I think it's the Holy Spirit convicting you of your alcohol use which is a good thing. You really don't want to get to the point of realizing the hard way that you have an alcohol problem. By the grace of God I never killed someone or myself with my sin. I was a prodigal, in a sense that I was saved, loved God, but loved my sin more at that time. If you're sealed in Christ, but let the addiction control you, it will just get worse and worse; again, if saved you will be with God forever but why risk living a miserable life, wasting a good life where God has purposed you for better things to be used for His glory. My advice to anyone who drinks and see it getting progressively worse- seek help- ask for prayer, stay away from drinking- stay in the Bible. You will regret missed years if you travel down the wrong path.

Praying for you Bonnie! You are very wise to understand that alcohol is NOT "the Way, the Truth, and the Life." Love and devotion to God and our Lord Father Jesus will surely help you conquer this addiction. Do you have a church nearby that you could become involved with? AA can help as well. Regular church attendance, volunteering, and activities could help you replace your compulsion to indulge in alcohol. Finding the right church is key, so maybe do some exploring with various churches and denominations. Blossoming in the Holy Spirit is indeed an exciting, fulfiling Way of Life. Blessings to you in your new Life!
