A once-every-500-years earthquake in the Pacific Northwest could shake for five minutes and cause 100-foot tsunami waves. New research says that would be just the start of the horrors.

The Cascadia subduction zone runs off shore on the West coast of much of America.

Although the on-land earthquake faults get a lot more attention (such as resulting
in shutting down a lot of West coast nuclear reactors), if the Cascadia fault slips,
the massive 100 foot tsunamis would destroy many West coast cities.
