  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Now I don't want to boast. Well...yes I do. Are we punching above our weight or what!

Yes, it's not good to boast. Also - I'll just leave this here....

Ooh, one more thing, my brother @Bradskii . One of the Australian high jumpers, Nicola Olyslagers (formerly McDermott), wrote 1 John 4:18 on her wrist.

1 John 4:18 (NIV): "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."

Nicola Olyslagers is 3rd on this list of athletes:

Why are you sorting by Gold medals and not total medals?

I will say that I enjoyed the USA vs Australia swimming rivalries (but we still be you 8-7 in Golds!).

All the figures quoted come from the Olympic website. Ranking countries based on Gold Medals won is standard for the Olympics.

Another way of ranking countries is to compare medals won to each country's population. This corrects for the natural advantage of wealthy countries with huge populations (like China and the US). This is the table in Post#3.

On a population basis China (ranked 48th) and the US (ranked 36th) are both well down the line.

This sort of medal count assumes an equal value between first (Gold), second (Silver) and third (Bronze) place.

If you want to take all medals into account you need a 3,2,1 point system where Gold gets 3 points, Silver gets 2 points and Bronze gets one point.

Basing a ranking on Gold medals avoids complicating the issue with a 3,2,1 point system.

In real terms no country ever 'wins' the Olympics. There is no official recognition for the country getting the most medals.

This is as it should be.

Since the US has a population about 13 times bigger than Australia you need to win around 90 Gold medals to equal the Australian result.

Agreed. Ranking on gold medals is better, but @BigDaddy4 asked about total medal counts, so I had to serve up some info for him.

But yes, no country wins the Olympics. It is an international event, and I am glad that no country gets official recognition for getting the most medals.

I cheer for Australia, cos I watch the Olympics at my workplace. :) Now, if you guys can beat the Commies (China), that would be awesome.
I know "Commies" is short for 'Communists" but it's also used as a derogatory slur.

People from China are 'Chinese'.

Ooh, sorry about that. I have met a few Chinese folks, and they are nice people, though, a bit shy and soft spoken. Saying I do not want the "commies" to win is partially a joke. Yeah, I could have not made that joke, so I apologize about that.

It appears that that's the way they generally rate the countries. it might be interesting to award points for each medal. Say ten for gold, 5 for silver and 2 for bronze. I might try that later.

Japan is doing surprisingly well. I never think of the Japanese as a sporting nation, but they've picked up medals for a range of different sports.

They're currently sitting 4th on the medal tally.

It is worth noting that politics slants things more than a little bit.

Only TWO swimmers from a country are allowed in any event. Both the United States and Australia suffer because of this. There probably has not been an Olympics this century where some United States swimmer who was the defending Olympic or World champion missed the Olympics because they finished 3rd or worse in the United States trials.

This year in one of the women's events (I think the 200 backstroke) something like 8 out of the top 10 swimmers based on this year's best times were from the United States. Australia never had something like this, but they regularly have at least a couple of swimmers who would have qualified from any country except Australia or the United States.

Right now a dual meet between The United States and Australia in swimming would be much tougher in about 1/4 of the events than the Olympics and very few events would be less competitive.

There are a lot of track athletes with dual citizenship who were born and grew up in The United States who are competing for other countries.

A funny and sad twist is Annette Nneka Echikunwoke. She was born in Ohio, but qualified to compete for Nigeria in Tokyo based on bloodlines. The Nigerian federation dropped the ball on drug testing paperwork and she was excluded. This time around the got a silver medal competing for the U.S.

If you watch the Track and Field events and listen to the commentary you will notice there are just about as many athletes with U.S. roots competing for other countries as there are for The United States.

Oh and to be fair. Russian wrestlers have just as much cause to be upset. In some cases 5 (or more) of the top 10 in the world are Russian. This has been the case for decades. That has the ironic result of there being more Russian wrestlers competing for other countries than there are Russian athletes competing as independent athletes.

Wanna know why Japan is so good at the Olympics? Cos Japan has that fighting spirit to win, just as Yusuke Urameshi did in Yu Yu Hakusho when fighting against villains. Yu Yu Hakusho is a classic 1990s anime, which I saw in January 2024.

Yu Yu Hakusho Scene (duration: 12 minutes, ages 14+ due to fight scene):

My son and daughter-in-law, plus three grandkids, are off on a holiday in Japan in a couple of weeks.

When they get back, I'll ask them if visiting Japan was just like being in an anime.

Haha, that would be a fun question to ask them. Also, I hope your son, daughter-in-law and your three grandkids have a safe trip to Japan. It would be cool to go there one of these days myself, but not for the anime, but for the architecture. Do you like anime?

I haven't seen much anime but, from the little I have seen, I doubt that it would particularly interest me.
