  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If You want them, search for REB Apocrypha on amazon.

If You want to discuss this version, go to: http://www.christianforums.com/t7653202/
... You can bump the thread even after a long time, I really want ongoing discussion!

Sirach (Ecclesiasticus) and 1 Mc are really good and should definately be included in the canon! Sometimes I read Ecclesiasticus from the Confraternity Version from the mid-20th-century. (I have a 1965 mass-market paperback.) Ecclesiasticus was read a lot in the Early Church, and Jesus quoted it.

There are many quotes of the Apocrypha (called Deuterocanonicals by the Roman-Catholic Church and actually included in the Old Testament) in the NT.

Good commentaries mention such quotes. To discuss commentaries, go to: http://www.christianforums.com/t7541241/
... You may bump that thread also if You have a review or an opinion.

Where are the books 1 and 2 Maccabees, Sirach, Wisdom, Baruch, Tobit, and Judith, and some chapters of two other books Daniel and Esther? and it may be others too? It's hard to find them. Did someone delete them and why? Does someone know about this? Thank you.

It can't be that hard to find them. Go to Amazon and type in "Apocrypha."

thank you, i used to hear about the word Apocrypha but i didn't know that it's about some old testament books and to know more I look up the links above and other links and I am deluged with information and clashing affirmations.
Some call those books Apocrypha and others call a few of them Apocrypha and the rest Deuterocanonical books.
Some say that these books weren't in the hebrew scriptures and others say that they were part of the scriptures used by the hebrew people.
Some say that the septuagints that are early manuscripts of the greek translations made for the greek speaking jews included the apocrypha and others say not.
Some of the early church fathers accepted all of the books of the Apocrypha as canonical, for example Irenaeus, Tertullian and Clement of Alexandria, Although others vehemently opposed their use, including Athanasius, Cyril of Jerusalem, Origen and Jerome.
Some say that the apocrypha were never accepted as canonical by Jesus and his disciples since the jews were not accepting them and others say they were used by Jesus and his disciples and that they were widely used by the jews with a reference that the hebrew canon was decided in 90 AD where the deutrocanonical books were left out of their canon because they were trying to take out the references to Jesus as the messiah.

i came to a conclusion that it may be better to read them and have my own conclusion since with the controversies one can't find two websites that support the same conclusion or assertion about the Apocrypha.

These are books which are not part of the Hebrew Bible (they were written in Greek). Jews today do not use them. Neither do most Protestants. However, Catholics do.

There are plenty of OT Messianic references, but not in the Apocrypha/Deuterocanonical books.

As others noted, these are the Deuterocanonical Books (often called Apocrypha by Protestants).

You can find them in any Roman Catholic or Orthodox Bible, and you can find them in their own appendix in Protestant Bibles if you specifically look for one (they were removed completely from Protestant Bibles within the last couple hundred years because they weren't all that popular among Protestants, many thinking they were "too Catholic", and also it was probably cheaper on printing costs to just take them out altogether).

So, for example, here's a copy of the ESV with Deuterocanonicals/Apocrypha. Since they are found in their own appendix, rather than in the traditional Old Testatment ordering, this is technically a Protestant Bible.

They have gotten less popular with Protestants. The Belgic Confession (1561) said this, for example:

"We distinguish those sacred books from the apocryphal, namely: the third book of Esdras, the books of Tobias, Judith, Wisdom, Jesus Syrach, Baruch, the appendix to the book of Esther, the Song of the three Children in the Furnace, the history of Susannah, of Bell and the Dragon, the prayer of Manasses, and the two books of the Maccabees. All of which the Church may read and take instruction from, so far as they agree with the canonical books; but they are far from having such power and efficacy, as that we may from their testimony confirm any point of faith, or of the Christian religion; much less detract from the authority of the other sacred books."
