  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I dable in oil painting. i cant draw, after i put gesso on the canvas I trace what i want to paint. I find that oil painting is easier because its fixiable. Any one who can paint with the water color to me they are truly artist. Im self taught so i sure dont know much.

Hi! I paint with water-mixable oils (can't stand smell of turps!) Mainly wildlife subjects. I have developed a style that works well with my limitations, a rather impressionistic background with a highly realistic subject. I can't post them yet, but I think you can access my website. Don't worry, nothing offensive on my page :pink:
Just started posting here, it would be pretty cool if they had a separate painter's subcatagory. I've been posting on another, strictly artists site for awhile, though (wetcanvas.com). Recently switched to oils from watercolors, and really love them. I like to mix up doing an underpainting with doing direct painting, depending on how much control I have in my hand on that day (neurological damage  )

I just started oil painting. I thought it would be really difficult, but I love how smooth the paints are! Too bad they're so expensive, or I'd get some myself. For now my favourite mediums are water colour and good ole graphite. I also like oil pastels and crayons...very smooth and easy to work with as well. :)

Hi, i'm an oil painter too. I just love how oil paint works.. how it covers the canvas, how even if i can't get it to do exactly what i want it to, it still turns out in the end. i don't think i can do that with water color or acrylic. oil is just so movable.. you can still change it to your liking. it seems like once acrylic or water color hits the paper, it's just so permanent.

I took a class in oil painting this year. I really liked it. The instructor taught glaze painting because he said it's the foundation for all other oil painting. Anyway, I'm not sure if I have the patience to be a glaze painter. But I did like working with oils.

I use the odor free paint thinner and it really is odor free! I was impressed.

Oil is really the only medium I use. I love the smell of turpentine, it's the best part of oil painting. I like to stretch my own canvases when I use them. I also paint on masonite boards. I was taught to use only 5 hues plus white. I can mix anything I want from these, much easier and cheaper than working with 30 tubes of pre-mixed fake paint. My artistic inspiration comes mostly from Eric Sloane, Andrew and James Wyeth, and Sargent.

I paint in acrylics mainly, but I also use oils, watercolors and pastels. My subject matter varies, at the moment it is mostly landscapes and cityscapes. Most of my work is on hardboard or luan board, but I also like to stretch my own canvases.

My palette is:
Alizarin Crimson (or Naphthol Crimson)
Cadmium Red light
Cadmium Orange (for convienience)
Cadmium Yellow light
Sap Green
Viridian
Cerulean blue
Ultramarine Blue
Dioxanine violet (rarely)
Yellow Ochre (or Raw Sienna)
Red Ochre
Burnt Umber
Ivory (or Mars) black
Titanium (and Zinc) White

I don't use all the colors, all the time, but I select my working palette from this list.

I too would love to see a list of HiredGoons palette and here a definition of "fake paint" and and explanation of it's available 30 colors.

I've worked well with acrylics (I'm mostly self taught) but have always loved the way oil paintings look. I bought some and tried using them, but am clueless.

Are you supposed to mix the oil paint with paint thinner? How much of each do you use? Is it supposed to take a long time to dry? Do you use paint thinner in lieu of water to clean the brush between colors?

Thanks!

Anything more than this is really unnecessary, think primary colors! You can change the hues to your preference, but the basic idea is one medium yellow, a light red, dark red, light blue and dark blue. You can mix anything from these, it's surprisingly easy, and a lot of fun, and fairly cheap. For me, it makes painting a deeper more involved experience, the time it takes to mix, the connection to the old ways. It's hard to describe. Using pre-mixed blacks, ochres, umbers, etc. just seems too much like cheating to me. Almost as bad as painting by numbers. In the end it's all a matter of personal preference.
