  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So often I hear quoted "It's just one of those 'Lord I believe help my unbelief' sort of situations."
I finally came across a situation in my life where sincerely I said that... and I was wondering what everyone thought about that actual passage from Mark 9 when Jesus casts out the demon.

What do you make of the father's phrase "Help my unbelief?" Any thoughts?

Here's a random one I had, which may sound kinda dumb...if Jesus says that that kind of demon only comes out by prayer, why doesn't the bible mention him praying? Is that a, Jesus is the son of God sorta thing?

Does this incident occur in another gospel with similiar phrasing? I don't think it does, but I thought I'd ask...

Hi, I wanted to write out the passage from Mark 9.
17A man in the crowd answered, "Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not."

19"O unbelieving generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me."
20So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.
21Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?"
"From childhood," he answered. 22"It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us."
23" 'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."
24Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"
25When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the evil[a] spirit. "You deaf and mute spirit," he said, "I command you, come out of him and never enter him again."
26The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, "He's dead." 27But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.
28After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?" 29He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer.[b]"

I too pray that prayer often, because it is our unbelief that holds us back. It was neat how the father said, I believe, help me to overcome my unbelief. We can move mountains if we have even the tiniest of faith.

I don't know if it was the disciples unbelief or the father's but I do that that when Jesus commanded the sprit to come out that that was enough to make the spirit leave. Since Jesus is God He just commanded it out. I think he meant that the disciples needed to pray for this 'kind' to come out. For some reason they did not believe they could cast out this demon.

I did a keyword search with unbelief and didn't find another one.

God bless you, Tapero

As Jesus said " If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth." When you ask something of God you have to believe it with all your heart. If there is any doubt or worry that shows you lack faith in Christ, then how can one expect God to answer their prayer? The disciples couldn't heal the child because the father was short on faith. Look at the other stories of Christ healing people. The ones He healed were full of faith. For example the woman in the crowd, she knew if she could just touch Christ's robe (even though she didn't ask Christ nor did he see her) she would be healed. It was her faith in Christ that healed her.

I think that it okay to ask for God to "help our unbelief".

When we pray we end our prayers with "In Jesus Name we pray, amen." When Jesus "prayed" he said "Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him." That was His prayer.
God gave us power over Satan that includes evil spirits. Luke 10:19 "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of th eenemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you."

Hope that helps

the dead guy in Luke 7 was dead. He didn't express an ounce of faith and Christ raised him from the dead. And, his mother didn't even know Jesus was there.

And the evil spirit answered and said to them, "I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?"

Beasley:

Luke 7:11 and on. This is not a lesson in faith, this was to show the people Christ's power and authority.
