Olive trees are fairly common in the Mediterranean area, and they are mentioned in a figurative sense in the Bible. The NT establishes a figurative relationship between Jews and Gentiles, and olive trees. Romans 11:24 implies that, in terms of man’s relation to God, Gentiles were derived from wild olive trees, and Jews were from cultivated olive trees. It would be hard to deny that Jesus is derived from a cultivated olive tree, as is the rest of God’s Chosen.
John 3:16–18 says that Jesus came to earth on a mission to save whoever would believe in him, with their destiny being to have eternal life. In terms of the olive trees, this includes those from wild olive trees and cultivated olive trees alike. Those from cultivated olive trees, such as the Jews, are already at least halfway there to believing in Jesus, since Jesus himself has said that he came to fulfill God’s Law and the prophets. And to those Jews, namely the Pharisees, who have their suspicions about the extent to which Jesus would abide by God’s Law and the prophets, Jesus condenses both in two commandments: one to love God with all your heart, soul and mind, and the other is to love your neighbor as you love yourself.
So, those Gentiles who believe in God through Jesus, come to have all the commandments they need to abide by in those two commandments. And as a further assurance, Galatians 3:29 says that if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to Promise God made to Abraham.
At the end of the day, those who believe in God are part of the same olive tree.
