Hey -- all you Catholics involved in Music, Retreats and Youth ministries -- I recently received an email from OCP (Oregon Catholic Press) that they are publishing a hymnal many have long been waiting for -- and it will be available next month. I am personally aware they have been thinking of making this huge step for the last ten years as they were diologuing with Don Moen, founder of Hosanna! Integrity (praise & worship music) back then. Took them a while!

Spirit & Song 2 (available August 2005)
http://www.ocp.org/en/hymnals/spiritandsong2/features.php

"Offering inspiring lyrics, well-crafted melodies, superb arrangements, and dynamic recordings, Spirit & Song 2 is by far the best resource of its kind. Music for so many different occasions: seasonal celebrations, liturgies, prayer services, retreats, service trips and many other special events."

• Features More than 200 songs, including many top 25 CCLI titles (the Christian music licensing organization)
• Fresh new songs by established CCM artists like Chris Tomlin, and Matt Redman
• An excellent resource for contemporary liturgical ensembles, youth and young adult groups, campus ministry, retreats, liturgies with youth and religious education sessions
• Makes a good contemporary supplement to your regular hymnal for Sunday liturgies

Blessings!

how are you deciding what is a fully Catholic song??

Calm down lonnie :)

I am not the deciding factor on what is a fully Catholic song...but I've seen some of the things that OCP has put out before, and some of it has been questionable at best.

Do you think you know more about what is fully Catholic than the Archbishop of Portland Oregon?

Nope, but if I had to guess, he's not examined all of the songs on the list. He's probably delegated the task to others. To suggest that because he's on the board, he has personally read through all 200 songs is a bit silly in my opinion, but hey...

Name some, please, and give me a reason why you don't think it belongs in a book of music to be used in the Catholic Church. Because we've been using OCP for many years, and my Pastor is very knowledgable and wouldn't let us use something that is not "Liturgically Correct".

i'm calm. i'm sorry if i came off as not calm. I was really asking how you define "Fully Catholic" i could well agree with you or discuss your criteria with you. Personally i find including Martin Luther's A Mighty Fortress in catholic hymnals a bit strange. but i love a lot of black sprituals. Again i would love to know what the criteria for fully Catholic songs is

No, it's not silly. And if they have to go through 200 songs, they will go through 200 songs. Even if they have to go through 2,000 or 2 million in order to get a book of music together, they will. Don't think that anything is done half "baked" ( I would use another workd, but it wouldn't get by the censors)

Some of the songs, more than likely, are those which could be sang by any Christian group of people, but do not have anything in them that would go against Catholic Doctrine.
Tom Booth wrote a beatiful song/prayer to Mary entitled "Lady in the Night".
Let's see if I can remember the words...heh...

My Lady, you been to me, as a star in the night. My Lady, a comfort you have been, and a joy as well. You have been my strength, you have been my hope, through darkness. You have brought the love, you have brought the peace, of Jesus.
My Lady, I'd like to share my heart, and thank you with this song. My Lady, may peace and joy and love be yours through Jesus.
I thank you with my mind, and I thank you with my soul, though not enough. A sign of hope are you, for all the world to see, though so few do.
Lady, praying in the night, for all the world. Lady, praying for us all. Hoping we will turn, turn to the Son.
Mary, filled with the grace of the Father's Love. How blessed are you, and blessed is your Son, our Lord Jesus.
Holy Mary, mother of our Lord, please pray for us. Teach us how to love, teach us how to pray, be with us in our life, be with us in our death. Amen.
My Lady.

And no, the stanza lines are not correct...I basically just typed while listening to the song. Haha.

Edit in: This song could probably, if it's in the hymnal, be used for use on a feast day for our Blessed Mother as the offeratory hymn (or whatever it's called during collection...I can't remember the names of anything  ).

If the Archbishop deligated the task of making sure the songs were theologically correct i would assume he delegated that authority to a knowledgeable person who he trusts so in the end if he says the book is good then even if he didn't read all the songs he is sure they are good cause he had someone he trusted read them.

sure...how about the song "Ashes", which OCP has published. From:

http://www.belief.net/story/137/story_13758_1.html

"The first hymns to go should be hymns that teach heresy. If hymns are more than liturgical filler, hymns that teach ideas contrary to Christian truth have no business in the liturgy. "Ashes" is the prime example here: "We rise again from ashes to create ourselves anew." No, we don't. Christ creates us anew. (Unless Augustine was wrong and Pelagius right). "

I can post others if you'd like.
