[History of the Nameless and Nyu] – Having inhabited every planet in their solar system, Humanity began to spread across the galaxy, looking for more land to house their ever growing population, and to look for any intelligent life outside of Humanity. What they discovered was not like anything they had imagined.
The first race that Humanity encountered was the Ai. Prepared for possible hostilities when they sent their advance group to the planet’s surface, they found the Ai, prepared with sonic weapons, aimed at them. When the Ai found that the Humans were not what they had thought, they welcomed the Humans into their city, keeping a wary eye on the surroundings. When they asked the Ai why they had even attacked the Ai in the first place, the Ai responded that Humanity looked much like the Ni, the Ai’s name for the Nameless.
The encounter with the Ai was largely uneventful, but long, and they learned that they had actually ended up on the Ai’s home world. The Human advance group established a temporary truce with the Ai, allowing the Humans to send researchers to the planet’s surface to explore and observe the various types of flora and fauna.
On the return trip to the Carrier, the advance group discovered the presence of an unknown being on their ship. Weapons ready, a security crew began a thorough search of the craft, not wanting whatever was on their ship to escape to the carrier. Thanks to the precision of the team, they soon had whatever they had been chasing cornered, whatever it was hiding in the shadows.
Shining a light on the being cloaked in shadows, they discovered what looked like a naked young woman cowering from them. When this was reported to the rest of the crew, one of the female members of the squad, an advance researcher, immediately went and took the woman to dress her. Meanwhile, the rest of the team wondered over the appearance of an unidentified Human on their vessel as the scout ship was pulled into the carrier’s cargo bay.
Over the next few days, the young woman was closely observed in the medical bay, and found to be in perfect health. However, they also discovered that the woman was incapable of speech, and did not seem to understand anything that was said to her. They did remark that she could read how they felt, and that the woman voiced her own feelings, though the sounds did not seem to have any basis on language.
Deciding to question the Ai as to the exact origins of the woman, the advance squad returned to the planet’s surface. Welcoming the Humans, the Ai brought them before their queen, who they questioned about the origins of the girl. The Queen responded with surprising anger, denouncing the woman as one of the Ni.
Before anything could be done, the planet’s atmosphere was filled with a loud thrumming, and the woman fell to her knees, clutching her head with both hands and screaming. The Humans immediately responded with worry over the woman’s apparent distress, so they were taken aback when the woman leaped to her feet and charged at the queen, screaming with an animal rage.
The woman was restrained by several large Ai after much difficulty, shortly after which the Ai all around them began to act with agitation. Asking the queen what was happening, the queen responded that an alarm had been sounded, and the Ni were attacking the city. Trying the best to ignore the Ni woman’s continued screams, the Humans listened to the queen as she explained the predicament, fear apparent in the queen’s clicking voice.
She explained that a horde of Ni, in numbers that had never been believed possible for the constantly hunted threat, were mindlessly attacking the city, tearing apart the Ai’s defenses. Offering the queen their assistance, the Humans quickly responded to the threat. However, they discovered shortly into the battle that their communications were jammed, and attributed to the strange buzzing that still filled the air, which had just been joined by a high pitched whine.
At this moment, within the queen’s palace, the Ni woman broke free of her captors’ grip, fleeing in the direction of the battle. Passing by the Humans on the battlefield and ignored by the still attacking horde of Ni, a small contingent of Humans followed after, interested in her destination.
After some time of following the woman, they found themselves near the top of a large hill thousands of feet from the battle. They soon lost sight of her as she went around a large boulder, and following quickly they found a large hole in the hill, leading into a dark tunnel.
After entering the tunnel and walking for some time it opened up into a large cavern, filled with a luminescent mold. The squad was surprised to discover that the sound of the thrumming was even louder here, although the high pitched whine was still audible. Not finding any sign of the Ni woman, the Humans searched for the source of the noise and located a large pillar rising to the cavern’s roof. Setting about to set explosive charges they destroyed the large pillar, ending the thrumming. To their confusion, the squad found that the whine could still be heard, and set about to find its source.
While the Humans dealt with the source of the interference, in a deeper part of the cavern the Ni woman was still heading towards unknown target, lead only by the pull of feelings. After a few minutes more she came upon a large pyramidal structure, with large obelisks rising from its corners.
Entering into the building, the woman ignored all of the runic writing upon the walls around her, the meaning lost on her primal knowledge. All that was on her mind was the intent which pulled her here and kept pushing her farther into the dark labyrinth.
Meanwhile, with the thrumming having been stopped by the Human squad, the attacking Ni suddenly stopped attacking, and turned around and fled instead. The defending Ai and remaining Humans were so confused by this display that they did not pursue the Ni while they fled.
Nearly have an hour after this occurrence, the Ni woman reached her destination. Before her was a large room, empty of all save a monolithic figure crouched low and unmoving. Approaching the figure, the Ni woman found a massive metallic being, which reared up to its full height before her. The thrumming sound began to permeate through the air around her, and she dropped to the floor, taking the fetal position as she felt as if her mind was being torn apart.
Within a small part of her mind, she had a feeling of resistance, of defiance. Slowly getting back to her feet, the woman eventually stood and faced the figure once more, proud defiance written across her face. A moment passed, and the figure raised one of its massive hands before bringing it down upon the woman.
The woman dodged the monoliths first attack upon her, and the battle ensued. After several attacks had been exchanged between the behemoth and the woman it was quite clear that the massive being was winning. Although the figure’s metal frame had several holes punched through it, this came at no small price to the Ni, who had broken a couple bones and was bruising on large portions of her body.
Without warning a bright flash came from behind the woman as a large blue bolt hurtled over her head and hit the behemoth, causing it to recoil. Once it had turned back around, glowing metal could be seen as a few drops of molten metal drop to the floor. Several more shots followed in succession, the behemoth raising its arms to protect its body from the barrage.
Seeing her chance, the Ni woman ran under the creature’s defense and leaped upon its chest and drew back a hand. Then, with a loud cry, the woman plunged her fist through the armor, and drew out a metal object, glowing red with heat. After the woman dropped from the monstrous being, the object still burning her hand, the great behemoth seemed to lose whatever dark imitation of life it held and fell to the floor causing the floor to shake.
When the Human squad reemerged from the cave with the Ni, they met another strange being surrounded by a blinding corona of light. Holding out what looked like hands, the Ni woman approached the figure. Turning away, the figure led the Ni away from the Humans who were inexplicably bereft of any will to follow.
After the Ni woman had been taken a large distance from the squad, the figure turned towards her, and a distinctly feminine voice echoed through her mind. It explained to her that she was the final surviving member of the most ancient race that called itself the Xelquis. The figure went on to tell the woman that the Ni had been created by the Xelquis long ago in order to create psychic links to them so that they could feel emotion, for the Xelquis were incapable of emotion themselves.
However, as their race began to die out, the Xelquis began to use their creations for more than just emotion. They became weapons, pawns in a grand chess game. It became apparent to the Xelquis that their control over their conduits, the Ni, was slipping whenever there were unbound conduits roaming about. Setting out to stop this problem, one of the few Xelquis that were left gathered all of the conduits to him and reconstructed their very DNA, their entire being.
All was not well though, for after having meddled with all of the conduits, the lone Xelquis, called Zyrxis, used the conduits that were now bound to him to destroy the other Xelquis. By the end of the carnage, the only Xelquis that was left alive was her, Islandis. Islandis also revealed to the Ni woman that she was Islandis’ own conduit, named Nyu. Islandis had used Nyu as a weapon against Zyrxis, whose greatest weakness had been his assurance at his total control over the Ni.
Beckoning for Nyu to follow her, Islandis began to approach the Ai’s city, the high pitched whine once more echoing through the firmament. After Nyu and Islandis had arrived at the city Nyu looked out and saw all her people, covering the plain just outside the now breached Ai wall. Looking up, Nyu could also see the approach of dozens Human scout ships, which quickly landed and released the well-armed soldiers that had been held within.
Turning to Nyu’s people, the Xelquis raised her hands, and her voice echoed across the plain, both telepathically and physically. “Welcome, creations of the Xelquis,” she cried. “Today, we shall make great steps towards your people’s advancement towards peace of mind, and the return of the Xelquis!” There were no cries of joy from the Ni, who did not even register having even heard Islandis. Reaching out to her people with her own newly discovered mental prowess, she recoiled from what she found. The Ni were not in control of their own minds, but were in fact under the mental sway of Islandis.
Nyu’s mind was aghast at the very idea of her people losing control of themselves in such a way, and fear began to grip her mind as she realized that if the Xelquis were to return, her people would never be free to control themselves. Feeling the same sway she had felt over her people coming over herself, Nyu began to crumble under the sheer psychic might of the shining being who stood next to her. But, when all seemed hopeless, she once more found that part of her mind screaming at her to fight and, if need be, die to be free.
Releasing a feral cry of rage and pain, Nyu drew back her hand and attacked what she assumed to be the Xelquis’ head. A brief psychic wave of terror washed across her mind, sent by the Xelquis, who had just realized Nyu’s betrayal, before all went blank. After only a moment, which seemed like an eternity to the Ni, they were suddenly fully aware of all about themselves and were fully capable of using the mental network that existed among them. Feeling a pressure upon her mind, Nyu sensed the removal of information from her mind by the collective mind of her people, and chaos ensued.

Being quickly overwhelmed, the Ni ignored the fallen Humans which they had considered little more than obstacles and swarmed the Human scout ships. Using the information taking from Nyu’s mind of the navigation of these ships and their operation, the pirated scout ships quickly began to ascend to the heavens, Nyu among their number.[/FONT]
