  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No, because vaccination is made of weak viruses so that our immune system will make antigens and is prepared when the strong viruse comes.

Homeopathy does not work with viruses but with plants, chemical elements etc and there is no system or way of how it should help fighting diseases (cancer, viruses etc).

But the theory and practice are the same aren't they? And if someone dies because of it's ineffectiveness that's on them as a legitimate treatment was known and available.

No, there is no working or proved theory behind homeopathy. There is no system on which it should work. Immune system accomodates to viruses, this is proved, so there is the theory for vaccination.

Here's the difference.

The theory and practice of homeopathy are fake.

Vaccines work, mostly.

End of story. Period. Forever.

As others have pointed out:

Homeopathy doesn’t work.
Vaccines do.

In the best of worlds, we would wisely accept the evidence and dispense with homeopathy while embracing vaccines.

Unfortunately, we live in a world of conspiracy thinking, tribalism, and scientific illiteracy.

Weak viruses, but lots of them (so that they generate an immune response).

Homeopathic medicine is just water.

...aren't most vaccines the same thing?

No, because vaccines have something in them, and traditional dilution-based homeopathy products have nothing in them.

(I have seen some 'homeopathic' remedies that are more like naturopathic remedies: herbal tinctures and whatever. They have something in them, but it is still not at all like a vaccine.)

Perhaps we should teach the 'science' of health instead of hiding it away from the public. Of course sickness is more profitable generally than is health, so there's that.

Sorry, I didn't mean "theory" in the scientific sense.

Better science education is something that educators and scientists have been fighting for for decades. Unfortunately, it's various anti-science movements (e.g. anti-vaxxers, creationists, climate change denialists, etc) that keep fighting it.

Of course sickness is more profitable generally than is health, so there's that.

This is primarily a regulatory issue especially in America. The entire health system (insurance, medicine, etc) is for profit. This could change but you have powerful lobbies fighting against it. Plus Americans keep voting against their best interests in this regard.

They could still teach good health couldn't they? There's nothing controversial about that.

Part of good health involves advocating for modern medicine and treatments. There are still segments of the population that resist that. Anti-vaxxers are a prime example.

That's a side issue.

No it's not a side issue. Just look at the effects of measles outbreaks as a result of anti-vaxx nonsense. It's a primary health issue in society currently.

It's the headline grabbing "soup-of-the-day" issue, and near the bottom of the list of health problems.

No, it really isn't. If you want a primary example of how lack of vaccination can effect a population just take a look at what happened in Madagascar during their measles outbreak. Over a thousand people died from an otherwise preventable disease.

If anti-vaxxers had their way, the same thing could be happening in your country.
