Well, our little man made his entrance into the world with a lot more drama than I had planned on!
My due date was Saturday September 16th and as the baby was a no-show I went for my scheduled 40 week prenatal appointment. The midwife did an internal exam and said I was about 2 cm dilated and 80% effaced and that my cervix was paper thin. I was given some primrose gell caplets to take and off back home I went. I felt a lot of pressure all the way home and when I got home I started having some contractions. The contractions stayed irractic for the next 2 hours and then...nothing. They stopped. Because nothing further had happened contraction-wise when I woke up in the morning I decided to still go to church which started at 10.30am. On the way to church I felt a contraction. My hubby asked if I wanted him to turn around and go back home. I told him no because I had only had a couple of contractions since the previous day. At church they got a bit stronger so I started timing them. Hubby asked me if we should leave and go to the birthing center but because they were really irregular and showing no pattern at all I told him no again. On the way home from church they got a bit more painful so I started to think that this might be the beginning of labor. The contraction I had when we got home was more painful than anything I remembered while being in labor with my daughter so hubby got our daughter ready and took her to his mother's house 5 mins away. The contractions were still really irregular but getting more and more intense. It was now a little after 1pm and the birthing center is about 25 miles away. My hubby called them at about 1.25pm en route to tell them we were on our way. The contractions were now so intense that I started yelling - something that surprised me because I never made a sound while in labor or delivering our daughter. Hubby made the 25 mile drive to the birthing center in about 15 mins
and we got there at 1.40pm. As my hubby opened the door to help me out my water broke with a big gush. The midwives wanted to check me first before taking me to a birthing suite so between contractions we went into one of the little exam rooms. A couple midwives tried to help my out of my soaked clothes and were going to help me up onto the exam table when another contraction hit. The contraction was so intense my legs started to buckle. One poor midwife ended up holding me up while another tried to check me. The midwife could see the baby's head already and with the next contraction he started crowning. With 2 more contractions his head was out and then with the next he was born at 1.57pm. From the time we got to the birthing center to the time he was born was only 17 mins. I never did get regular contractions and the only thing that even gave me an inkling that this was going to be it was the intensity. It was a totally different experience than giving birth to my daughter. Her birth was slow and steady but this one was incredibly painful and hard and fast. Anyways, here is a pic and his stats
