  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

In this day in age in America, the courts make the law. The country's government was not set up like this, but it has somehow gotten to this point. This is the country of lawsuits, where people will appeal cases all the way up to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court also decides whether laws are constitutional or unconstitutional.

Supreme Court justices (there are 9) are not elected by the people, they are appointed by the president. And they are appointed for life. In the next four years, 2, possibly 3 judges are most likely going to retire, or even die (one is in really bad health right now). Since Bush won, and since the Congress is mostly Republican he can appoint conservative judges that will ultimately make the laws regarding moral issues like partial-birth abortion and gay "marriage." John Kerry said he would not appoint any pro-life judges. Bush will.

So, the effects of this election are very, very long term. Had Kerry won, there would be no chance of banning any types of abortion, which kills ~1.6 million babies each year in the USA. Now we have the best chance in a generation to change that law. And our prospects look great!

Hopefully we will see a weakening (or overthrow) of Roe v Wade and greater protections for traditional marriage, more opportunities for faith based outreach, a continuation of the ban on federal funding of abortions & stem-cell research, and ongoing/increased promotion of abstinence based health ed in public schools.

Question is: Can we break a filibuster? Don't you need 60 votes in the Senate to break a filibuster? If so, can we get 5 Dem's to switch to the Republican side to break any filibustering attempts to vote on the stronger conservative judicial nominations?

Because abstinence only is working so well.

I think that you are appealing to a myth here. The judiciary is no more active that it has evern been. In fact, law is made less these days. If you look at England before the Revolution, you find the same thing. Immediately after the Revolution, America followed the same pattern.
