  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Went to the HUGE cathedral at Beauvais just outside of France (so big the Notre Dame can fit inside).

But I just think the Sainte Chapelle is just the most gorgeous of them all.

I saw Vivaldi's 4 Seasons and Pachebel's cannon performed there a couple years ago. IT was +35 in there but dang, it was a highlight of my life.

Slightly over ambitious with that one.

Very pretty. For me tho I prefer Chartres just because of how weird it can be here and there. They really let the artists off the leash.

Wow. Amazing.
I haven't been to Chartres. I don't know if i'll end up in/near Paris again in my lifetime but if I do, I wanna go to NONE of the places I've already been to and new places only (which seems SILLY...some of the places I haven't seen).
Been to the louvres 4 times and NEVER musee d'orsay. I also started reading about little "curio" shops filled with weeeeird things.

So when my church allows Toastmasters and 12 Step programs in, it also becomes a secular building?

Is this some silly anti-catholic nonsense?

I saw lots of Cathedrals through Germany and France, but strangely the one that stood out to me the most was Felsenkirche. It’s extremely modest compared even to most churches here in the US, but there was something about it that just was extremely profound and engaging.

Coool. Never heard of it before. Looks pretty spare inside. I wonder what generated the feeling?

There is a spring in there that adds to the surrealness, and the whole back wall is literally the mountain. Like, not a rock wall or slab, but the actual mountain.

But I think for me it’s the walk up there. You really feel like you exit the modern world and enter a sanctified space. It feels like an encapsulated pilgrimage. There’s something like 200+ steps and it’s in a tunnel largely. You hear nothing but people going up or down the steps.

I’ll admit it’s super modest, but the outside is very grand when viewed in scale. Like a castle from a fairytale over the small village. And while I love the big grandeur of the cathedrals, since they’re usually super mobbed and often in a busy part of a well populated town, there’s an encroachment that affects the experience. This church didn’t have that when I went, so it was less of a shoulder-to-shoulder mob tourist experience and more compartmentalized and personal. It was very easy to imagine looking up at it in the 1500s and just be awestruck.

Ah I totally get that. I think some atmosphere of peace really helps a place like that to reveal itself. I was lucky to visit Chartres in January when hardly anybody was there...... Plus a spring and the hewn rock face. That connection to the earth is pretty rare in church building it seems.

Reminds me a bit of Fujiki Temple which I visited bike touring Kyushu. A Buddhist temple built in the 700's, out in the woods and mountains.

I would kill to do a temple tour. I’m reading about Eiheiji right now and even though the experience sounds grueling, it’s fascinating. The best I can do is living vicariously through Japanese shows.

YES! Sainte Chapelle is by far the most beautiful church I’ve ever been to! It’s beyond gorgeous!

I’ve been to France, but never Germany. I would love to visit the Cologne Cathedral if I ever have the chance.
