  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Notre Dame-Backed Alumni Group Lauds Gay Marriage, Transgenderism
National Catholic Register - 25 April 2022

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A new alumni group launched at the University of Notre Dame celebrated same-sex civil marriage and transgenderism on the Indiana campus over the April 8-10 weekend — with the Catholic university’s official sponsorship.

The Alumni Rainbow Community of Notre Dame (ARC) held its “ND LGBTQ+ Alumni — Past, Present & Future — A Celebration of Our Community’s Journey” event from Friday to Sunday.

“We encourage everyone who has participated in this journey over the past 30+ years, as well as more recent alums, to join your fellow LGBTQ alums & friends for this fun and memorable celebration,” the organization said in a press release promoting the gathering.

The events in South Bend included a Friday alumni networking event, Saturday night awards banquet and Palm Sunday Mass. Award recipients included 1982 alumnus Greg Bourke — who with his male spouse was a party to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges that legalized same-sex civil marriage — and “leading South Bend transgender LGBT activist” Meghan Buell.

Holy Cross Father Joseph Corpora received the “Outstanding Faculty/Staff Award in Support of the ND LGBTQ+ Campus Community.”

(As one might expect, this Rainbow Rebellion has generated a major outbreak of pearl clutching among conservative Catholic alumni. Notre Dame has also taken the unforgivable step of extending spousal benefits to same-sex married spouses of Notre Dame employees.

Given the current controversy in Germany and the Pope's (apparently) ambivalent attitude to LGBTQ, it appears that Catholicism's anti-LGBTQ walls may be crumbling. We can only hope.

Watch out for female transgender priests coming to a Cathedral near you :) - OB)

America's moral decay is leading to political and social decay. Donald Trump? Joe Biden? Who is the next president? Donald Duck?

G'day Pete.

I was sorta hoping the prospect of marriage would mellow you a bit but - never mind.

(Congrats by the way:clap:)

Thanks. I seriously hope that I'll be proven wrong. I'm not enamoured of the idea that China overtakes the US as the leading power in the world. I hope that the US wakes up to itself. I like America and Americans generally. I'm not one who blames them for the ills of the world. I hate to see the direction that they are taking.

By the way, I'd be happy to meet you if ever you get to Frankston.

America always had moral problem. But accepting gay people takes it over the top. I don't believe that at all.

We have gay rights and now the possibility of China takes over the United States. I don't see this happening over the gay rights.

When a nation forsakes God, as is happening in the USA, UK and parts of Europe, God's blessing comes off. I was born in England. It was once the greatest empire in history. It controlled 25% of the land mass, ruled the oceans and 23% of the population. Now even the Scots want out, the Irish are unhappy and Britain has not been "Great" since the end of WW1.

I'm not saying that China will occupy the USA. However, the place of the USA as the supreme world power is very much under threat. American influence is waning. China's is rising. I'm 71. I've seen a great deal of change over the decades. I wish that I could say that the changes have been for the better. There are no accidents.

A spirit of insanity has gripped some nations, Australia included. The loonies claim that it is possible to choose your gender. Biologically that is impossible. God created male and female and that's it. We are lambasted here with "believe the science" over supposed climate change. Yet when it comes to gender, it's actually illegal to tell your children that they were born male or female and that's it.

God's judgement is simple. He leaves people to their own wicked ways. Read Romans 1 to see where that ends up.

What does China's rising power have to do with gay marriage in the US?

Erm. Millions of people starved to death in Ireland and India during Empire.

Please stop with the bizarre and blatantly ridiculous idea that empire was a blessing.

When a nation forsakes God

You can be forgiven if you didn't know this since you're not from around here, but this nation has not forsaken God; a nation has to embrace God, first. It is clear that from the beginning the U.S. was not on God's side as is evident from the brutal enslavement of Africans and the near genocide of Native Americans. That's how we started and we have barely tried the repentance necessary to be on God's side. Yes, many good faith Christians have inhabited this land, but this has never been a Godly country. Until we (the inhabitants of this land) disabuse ourselves of this lie that we were Godly and now are not, we will never get close to the truth or the change needed to embody the ideas with which we started.

Notre Dame no longer seems to be a Catholic University. They have preferred modernity and all of it's values over and above any commitment to Catholicism. I hope faithful Catholics don't send their children to Notre Dame.

No nation will be truly godly until Jesus returns. Yes, the USA and the UK were flawed. However, there was an underlying Christian basis that many other nations lacked. The UK produced men of God like the Wesley brothers, John Bunyan, C.T. Studd, Hudson Taylor, Charles Spurgeon, William Wilberforce, and a host of others who devoted their lives to the gospel. In the 19th century, half the population of the UK were regular church attenders. The church of England is virtually extinct now. More people disbelieve in God than believe.

The USA is more complicated. However, church membership has declined from 70% to 47% in the 20 years from 2000.

When looking at these things, you can see the positives, the negatives or both. You can focus on the doughnut or the hole. Once Great Britain was the undisputed super power. The US took her place both economically and militarily. That did not happen by accident. It is also no accident that Britain is no longer great and the USA is under threat from China.
