Is anyone reading the Girlfriend Of Steel 2/Iron Maiden 2nd manga, or the Ikari Shinji Raising Project manga? GoS II (affectionately called 'Love Eva' by fans) has been running for a while; the other has just started.
Both manga are set in the alternate universe from the dream sequence of Episode 26, although they go about it differently. GoS II is actually based on the game of the same name, which was in turn based on the Episode 26 segment, but meh. ISRP is actually a sequel to two other PC games that Gainax produced, based around Rei and Asuka, respectively.
GoS II's animation takes a bit of getting used to (the characters all seem to be a bit anorexic-looking, and it looks very different from the TV series, movies, or games), and the translation is a bit clunky, but it manages to still be a good read, if you can get past how bizarre the situations are. The first chapter sticks fairly close to how the segment went down in the last episode, and does well as a recap before going into the actual story. This manga is apparently extemely popular in Japan, and a lot of fans are hoping its success prompts Gainax to finance a full anime based on it. I've already read up to Volume 4 Chapter 1, which is the most recent chapter released.
ISRP looks more like the last episodes of the TV series did, animation-wise, but as there is only one chapter available at the moment, I can't really comment on the storyline. A significant difference, however, is the way it's presented. The major difference is in Rei and Shinji's first encounter and the role Rei is apparently going to play in this series.
Now that I've laid down the basics, let's discuss!
