In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am losing my ever-loving mind. My 2 1/2 year old son will not stop picking his nose. I feel like a broken record. Get your finger out of your nose, Stop picking your nose, Leave your nose alone, Would you like a kleenex, Stop picking your nose, Get that finger out of your nose (ad infinitum).
This morning he picked it so deep or hard or somthing, that he gave himself bloody nose. I mean a real bloody nose, blood all over both of his hands, my shirt, the couch. ARGH!!!!!!!

Any thoughts on how to stop this?

My son used to do that. Then, he stopped. I just found out why. His older sister told him that there is a booger monster that lived in his nose that liked to eat his boogers, and when he stuck his fingers in there, the booger monster would bite off his fingernails. Then, she said, pretty soon, it'll start biting your fingers off if you don't stop.

Well, he did stop....

Heh. :) somehow that method is not in the psych books :).

First I would want to know if he maybe lost something up there, or has a stuffed up nose or something medical?

Then if it is just a habit, here are some methods I have tried on kids (mostly when I taught, older kids, and not my own so not full time experience, only during class hours and had peer pressure too)

-make them wash their hands EVERY time you find them in the nose, most kids have better things to do with their day than spend it at the sink.

-Play up the grossness. NEVER use with a boy! (or not a typical boy anyway)

-refuse to have their hands on you, since they are snot or bugger covered, actually this wasn't a method or ploy it was plain and simple before kids I never had snot on myself and didn't want to start with theirs! EWWWW (only effective in k-5 and such when kids are still really huggy with teachers, or mine were anyway)

-make it a baby thing, (actually I used this with hands in the mouth, k-4 kids still do that alot), and I would emphasize the kids in school don't have hands in their mouths, and of course follow with a cool activity that only big kids get to do.

I have heard that ignoring works well, but knowing far to many adults who still pick their noses I don't trust it myself!

Oh and for fingers in the mouth with my two, I ask 'wheres your finger' and try to have several activities a day where both hands are needed (fingerp paint :).), and cut down or out all where no hands are actually needed (watching TV). Niether one has a major addiction though DS has his moments and DD is still getting teeth, so when they are bad, finger is in A LOT.

I picked my noze until the kids at school made fun of me. Honestly, it is a habbit I've still not rid myself of entirely, I've actually woke up because I couldn't breath while picking my nose in my sleep. At least no one actually sees me do it, and I kinda see it as an out of sight out of mind thing... cos really, we all do much more disgusting things in the bathroom on a regular basis, nose picking isn't really that big a deal IMO.

I also bite my nails... probably more than any person on Earth ever has before. Anoyed my mother so much that she bought this chemical stuff that tasted horrible to try to get me to stop. Didn't help any; it tasted bad but I still bit my nails.

I pick my nose and now my son does too. Don't we all? Have you ever felt dry, itchy, irritated or crusty in the nose and picked it? I have but my son picks as a habit or perhaps for comfort. As he's falling asleep he picks his nose or bites his nails. I hate it I sound like the mom who started this thread. I'm going to try some of those psyc. pointers. I think the combination of the no touching and hand washing will work for the picking. What about the nail biting?

I bit my nails for 20 years before I stopped. I started nibbling on the edges of pen caps to get my hands out of my mouth, then I began carrying a nail file EVERYWHERE I went! I still keep them in the car, my purse, at home, and at work. Even after 10 years, if I get a snag, I'm still tempted to bite it off. I don't let myself, though. I make myself use an emery board.

A friend of mine moved to Denver wher she teaches school, and I asked her what was different about school out there, and she said "Well, kids pick their noses a lot more." The air is very dry, and mucus dries into uncomfortable flakes and clumps in nasal passages, and kids get thenm out with what's handy...

Is the air dry where you live? Could it be that your child is/was reacting to that, and it has become a habit now? A humidifier in the bedrom at night might help.

Thanks for all the advise. We live in the suburbs of Chicago. It's very muggy here right now, so I don't think dryness is why he's doing it. I think he just likes to have his finger in his nose. He rarely pulls anything out of it and when he does, he's like "Ew, Mommy get it off, get if off".

He's been much better since the bloody nose yesterday morning. I also don't think there is anything stuck in it either, my husband and I have both check it. While his nose was bleeding, I kept asking him if there was anything in it and he kept saying "yes, red juice"

I don't care if the air is dry or not, a tissue should be used! Ewww.

As for the kid in this situation, I'd break him of the habit if he were my own. My nephew had this problem and I kept telling him to get a tissue and making him wash his hands if I noticed his fingers in his nose. He got out of it in about a month.
