Yesterday our nonprofit office, Rebuilding the Village Foundation received an email from a young single mother in Los Angeles who was seeking assistance with trying to find community programs to help her. The father of her two children had been killed in a car accident a little over a year ago, which has forced her small family to survive off a “one-parent” income. After talking to her over the phone, she stressed that she understood times were difficult for everyone, so she did not know who to turn to for help without being a burden to others.

Touched by her story, a couple of our staff took a dinner over to her and talked with her for a while. Although she is working, the income she makes keeps her “just behind” the bills instead of ahead of the bills. Just to put food in the house, she sold the little used car her family had so now they are all on the bus until she can find a way to replace their transportation. Embarrassed that she needs help, unsure of where to turn, scared of not being able to provide for her family she just wanted to know if our office knew of any programs for people who worked because they did not want to be on welfare or use food stamps but ran into those moments when they needed groceries for the family or help paying the gas bill that month.

Her story is all too often played out across the United States, the story of those who are determined to be employed and trying to make a way for their family but just not seeming to make ends meet. Those who are desperately trying hard to not be a part of the system but are a paycheck away from being homeless, without food and then will be forced to become a part of the system.

Her story touched us and while we realize we can’t help everyone, we can do what we can to assist at least one. So our nonprofit has decided to take up the cause to at least put her back on her feet and get her family through the holidays with a little bit of financial cushion.

Realizing that times are indeed difficult for everyone, we are simply asking for a $1 to $5 donation which will allow us to stock her kitchen with food for the upcoming Thanksgiving holidays, catch her up on her household bills and allow her to provide a Christmas for her children.

All donations to our nonprofit are tax deductible and you can verify our nonprofit status at Guide Star (dot) org by typing in our tax id number of 20-1342828. You can make a donation securely via PayPal by sending whatever touches your heart to our PayPal account at info (at) RebuildingTheVillageFoundation.org or GuideStar will also allow you to make a donation as well.

Five dollars or less is such a small gift to give to help lift up another in their time of trouble
