I was talking with my friends and we've heard that a man doesn't have to be ordained to become pope. Does anyone know about this (maybe even know of church documents explaining the issue)? Also, if this is true, wouldn't he be unable to perform the priestly papal duties (papal masses, etc.)? How would this work?

After election- any celibate Catholic male is indeed able to be elected- the Dean of the College of Cardinals would ordain him Deacon, Priest, and Bishop in succession. So, a layman can be elected to the Papacy, but he must receive ordination ASAP. In practice, this just does not happen, Cardinals do not vote for anyone outside their number.

The cardinal can elect also a lay people, but he shall be immediatly ordained bishop.
The pope is the bishop of Rome!!

the last church document about this is UNIVERSI DOMINICI GREGIS (but the same rule has been ALWAYS present):
88. After his acceptance, the person elected, if he has already received episcopal ordination, is immediately Bishop of the Church of Rome, true Pope and Head of the College of Bishops. He thus acquires and can exercise full and supreme power over the universal Church.
If the person elected is not already a Bishop, he shall immediately be ordained Bishop. (http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/j...apc_22021996_universi-dominici-gregis_en.html)

This happened sometime in the history

Last not-bishop elected pope was Pope Gregory XVI in 1831, who was immediatly consacrated bishop.
Non-bishop. Not non-ordained. I thought the question was asking about non-ordained men being elected as Pope. Which I think hasn't been done since St. Celestine V in the 13th century?

Anyways, I think it's an academic question in the modern world. One I need to stop worrying about and go do real things. Good night :)

Also St Celestine V was a preist before to be elected pope.

A priest is not a bishop, so he ld need to be ordained bishop.
A lay ld need to be ordained deacon, than priest, that bishop.

Another question is, is it possible for a man to be ordained a bishop without him already being ordained to the priesthood and/or the diaconate? Can one be skipped?

Ordination 'per saltum' ?

I dont know for sure.

Probably it is a valid ordination, but for sure it is not used and is illicit.

Thanks, that's kind of what I thought.

No, they will be ordained in succesion deacon, priest and bishop.

(That would be a Mass) :)
