Non-denominational?

So what does it mean? As far as this forum goes .. what does it mean?

Is it that you are accepting of people from all denominations... maybe even Catholic? Or does it mean that we have to renounce our affiliation with our Churches?

I would really like to post in a forum that spoke of God and Christ, and how Christianity works in our life.. without the denominational battles that are so dominant on most of the forums.

So is this a good place?

I would think non-denominational generally means that that particularly church or church group isn't associated formally with a recognized denomination. It tends to be more accepting of those who have different beliefs that are not a core part of what being a christian is about. The main thing is Jesus and being focused on him.

If what you say is true.. then I'm not welcome here.. or I am welcome here?

I was hoping to find a place to talk spiritually of our walk with Christ, without getting into all the theology that is on the other boards.

I spend most of my tme in apologetics taking with Atheists about God and spirituality.

I would say that you are welcome here, just not to debate. I'm in the same boat that you are in, I'm a pastor in a small pentecostal denomination but I have had no problems, no one has thrown me out (as of yet anyway!). So I would say welcome to the non denom board, their are some great people here!

Non-denominational can be a number of things, but to me it means taking the wheat and leaving the chaff.

Like you, I'm not interested in denominational battles either. They really don't serve much purpose. How many people come to Christ as members of the Body of Christ argue over baptism, OSAS, etc.

Even in the case of the Catholic church, you have to realize there are a number of born-again believers.

I used to be a member of a non-denom church (grew up in it for nearly 30 years.

I agree that denominations are not what God intended for the church. Unity of fellowship and love is what God intended.

However, the word denomination means "to divide and name"... and I would have to ask, hasn't "non-denominational" become just another named division of the church?

If a person must be a member of a specific group, in order to be non-denominational... doesn't that make non-denominational, just another denomination???

This or a variant of this gets asked just about every month. Outwardly, all it means is that we don't fall under the authority of a governing church structure.

Personally, I use the term "non-denominational" to indicate non-allegiance to a specific Christian denomination. That does not mean non-affiliation, however, as I've found out some people here use the term to mean rejecting any and all denominations. I don't necessarily reject all denominations; I just don't believe that one single denomination has all the right answers or is the only "true" christian church.

That's my impression of what this forum is suppose to be--inclusive of all denominations--it does not exclude you because you belong to a different denomination. Perhaps "inter-denominational" would be a more accurate term to describe it, but that's what I assume this forum to represent.
