Noise and Hearing from God
You know, I was thinking. Why is that? Why do we have so much trouble slowing down and catching our breath for a minute? I was watching that and it brought up a good point. Matthew 11:28 clearly says Come to me, all of you who are weary and heavy burdened and will give you rest The Amplified Bible goes on to say I will ease and relieve and refresh your soul. Refresh you soul, doesnt that sound good? I dont doubt that all of us could use some soul refreshing.
Lets try something. I want everyone to sit up straight no slouching or holding yourself up with your hands. Sit Indian style if you like.
Now gently close your eyes and take a deep breath. Dont think about anything and if anything comes to mind, just push it away.
Relax.
Take some deep breaths and focus on resting.
Enjoy the silence, nothing to disturb you just quiet.
Rest.
Isaiah 58:11 says:
The LORD will guide you continually,
And satisfy your soul in drought,
And strengthen your bones;
You shall be like a watered garden,
And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.
You can open your eyes now. Gods promised us these things so why arent we experiencing them. Why do we go around dragging our feet and running around like a chicken with our heads cut off wondering when were going to get a break. Its there, in simple letters, Come to me and I will give you rest.
Mother Theresa said We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence... We need silence to be able to touch souls.
In order for God to hold up His end of the bargain and give you the rest you so desperately need, you have to be willing to come to Him in the silence where He resides. This is easier then you think. Just think about it for a minute. How many times a day do you bypass the chance to hear from God by indulging your ears or mouth every chance you get?
How often do you surround yourself with noise? Whether your riding down the road, taking a shower or just occupying your free time, when was the last time you just embraced the silence?
Psalm 62:1 says:
My soul waits in silence for God only; From Him is my salvation
Why is silence so awkward? Why do we feel the need to pop in a cd or tune in to our favorite radio station every time there are more then a few moments of silence?
Some people on occasion, myself included, dont even allow a chance for silence. Before the car is put into drive were already thumbing through cds or radio stations. Im not saying this is a bad thing in itself, but how are we ever going to hear from God if we dont give him the chance to speak to us.
Its a true display of Gods love and patience for that when were finally ready to pull the cotton out of our ears that He is right there ready to speak peace, love and direction to us.
Jerome K. Jerome said: Among all nations there should be vast temples raised where people might worship in Silence and listen to it, for it is the voice of God
No talking just listening.
Im sure some of you are thinking to yourselves Well, what if I do this, what if I do give God the chance to speak to me. Will He really talk to me?
Well of course He will, and were going to prove it. Not only does the bible say countless times that He will guide us and speak to us if we let him but common sense says that it wouldnt make sense for Him not to talk to us.
First lets look at a few verses.
Psalm 34:4 says: I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.
Psalm 143:8 says: "Cause me to hear Your loving kindness in the morning, for in You do I trust;
Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to You." Psalm 143:8
Psalm 32:8 says I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you and watch over you.
And finally Isaiah 30:21: "Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way, walk in it,'
Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left."
That last one is about as blunt as it gets, God is saying flat out I will speak to you. The only thing you have to do is let Him.
So we see that God says without a doubt that if we make ourselves open to hear His voice that Hell speak to us. Now lets look at how common sense plays into this.
Okay, lets get a few facts in order:
First of all God made us in his image, right?
He had the option of making us anyway He wanted too but no He didnt. He made us in His image, the very best image there is.
So this for one shows that Hes loved and cared about us from day one.
We see now that we were made after Him, the work of His hands, His children.
(Pick someone from the audience) So tell me _____, what does any good father want to do with his children? (Spend time with them)
So right off the bat we can see that God loves us and wants to spend time with us. But it goes on. (Big smile)
God loved us so much that He sent his only and son Jesus for us. Not only so that he could heal us and guide us but also save us by dying for us.
Thats seems like a pretty big act of love. Not something you would do for just anybody.
Thats the key, were not just anybody, were the apple of His the eye, the thing that makes His heart flutter. He sent His son, the only one who could pay the price for us to show us that He loves us more then life itself. He died, so that we could we could live.
Imagine for a second, the person you love most in this world.
Imagine that you get to spend the entire day with that person.
Would you talk to them? Of course you would. Gods no different.
He loves you more then anything else in this world and Hes there by you every day whether you realize it not. Hes saying Come and I will give you rest or Walk this way.
So the question is not if or will God speak to you. The question is, are you willing to make the effort to listen?
This brings me to my final question.
Do you think God is really worth listening too?
Let me ask you this, who do you listen to now?
Do you listen to the doctor? You must think hes worth listening to, to be willing to accept the rather hefty fees that go with seeing him.
Why not then listen to God, the creator and maintainer of all life. The Master Physcian. The one capable of healing all our ailments whether theyre physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual.
Do you listen to the forecast? Do you take your umbrella with you when they say its going to rain?
Why not then listen to God, the creator of the all heaven and earth and everything that resides in it.
Do you listen to friends and family? Do you take advice from them?
Why not then listen to the one who planned every moment of your life out before you were ever born. The one who knows every tear youll cry and word youll say before you even say it?
Why not listen to Him?
So the next time your driving from point a to point b or taking a shower or even just killing some free time. Turn the radio off for a few minutes, put the phone down and see what God has to say to you today.
