In James 3:12 we read; Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Just as we know a tree by the fruit that it bears, so also the waters of doctrine a person speaks can be either a blessing, or a curse upon those who drink it. Just as kind words can be pleasant to the hearing as fresh waters are refreshing to thirst, but so too can offensive words be like salt water to the man who also is a thirst.
In the same manner the doctrine of carnally minded men can be like salt water, as the spiritual Word of the Lord like fresh. And just as the world is covered mostly by salt water, so also is the majority of doctrine by man. It is the precious few that are the minority, those few fresh wells of water who spring up by faith and hold fast to the spiritual doctrine of Christ.
Jesus said in John 7:38; He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. This living water is the Word of God that dwells inside the man, and when spoken by the Spirit of Truth can bring forth Life, just as the Lords Christ is that very Word of Life.
We are shown these living waters in Jeremiah 17:13;
O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters. And in John 4:10 we see those living waters came in the flesh, in a man named Jesus.
Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
And just as Moses parted the salty waters of the Red sea by the power of God, we also see that Christ would part the Mount of Olives and bring forth living waters out from Jerusalem, half to the former sea, and half to the hinder sea. Zechariah 14:8; And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.
And just as the Lord brings the rains of heaven upon the earth to water it, so also the Lord shall bring forth the former, and the latter rains in its due season. Jeremiah 5:24; Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
Hosea 6:3;
Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
Joel 2:23;
Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.
And just as the Lord separated the waters of heaven and earth in the beginning, so also the Lord has separated the salt waters from the fresh; but the majority of this present world lives in this sea of iniquity. We see this sea of iniquity in Revelation 17:15; And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the harlot sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. But the Lord would later cry unto his people in these polluted waters to come out of her. Revelation 18:4; And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
The Lord showed in Ezekiel that the day would come when the Living waters of the Lord would flow out to the healing of the desert places, and to the healing of the sea. Ezekiel 47:8; Then said he unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed.
Ezekiel 47:9; And it shall come to pass, that everything that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; and everything shall live whither the river cometh.
And we see the source of the river in Revelation 22:1; And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
And by all this we can then see, and understand this verse of scripture in Revelation 21:1; And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
